as dave mentioned, make sure it’s the period (decimal point) on the numeric keypad to the right, not the punctuation period on main keypad, on mac at least.

don’t take offense but i think you might still have something wrong. photoshop files will work fine in c4d with no fringe and no need to choke if done correctly, and i don’t think SAT will make any diff for the alpha problem.
are you sure you’re getting the settings actually selected in the “Layerset . . . Select” tab under the alpha shader properties? if you save the pshop file with no bg (checkered bg shows) and without a separate alpha channel, load the pshop file into both color and alpha of c4d material channels and in the alpha “choose layerset” pane use the first entry: “layers/layers sets” and check ‘generate alpha” then make sure you actually select and hilite the layer 1 (it turns yellow) that appears in the pane below. it should be clean with no-fringe if the phsop layer is clean, works for me at least.

“thanks for your help…..using a new app sure makes you feel dumb!!!”
nope, that’s what dave is here for. 🙂

hey roger,
i can relate. don’t give up. i’m an old guy too, came to c4d by way of paintbox, compositing with multiple 1′ machines and matte reels, ADO’s, photoshop, then after effects, etc., etc.
my personal advice with c4d is don’t try to learn it all. decide what you really want/need to do with it and focus there, do some simple paying jobs where you can work it into your usual methods and use it as a supplement to your afx skills. i don’t say this with pride but, i’ve been using it for about 4 years (still a newbie) and i seldom model anything, never do character rigging, barely use expressions or exotic long rendering liting/material setups. i admire these skills and these things are all on the “learn-it” list but i don’t need them currently and have accepted i might not get to them this week. most valuable to me are things like: work on moving the cameras smoothly and how to use spline paths with cam’s, get basic liting skills together, figure out how to use live video in your scenes, and use illustrator shapes/type as elements along with the c4d primitives. get comfy with the rendering module and it’s possibilities for export to afx.
most importantly, just keep doing what you’re doing, focus on tut’s that address what you really want to do. also, just play and experiment and do variations on tutorial theme or methods.. it’s one of the most powerful and amazing tools you’ll get to work/play with. give it time and, oh yeah, take your vitamins and gingko biloba. good luck.

that’s great. if you already have a beta preview serial number from an installed version of AFX CS3 do you need to get a new beta serial number to go behind the 2 day trial or will the same one work?

sheesh, when in doubt, right click, thanks brian.

“When you go to Import Footage dialog, you’ll see an “Enable” menu on top. Change it to “all files”. After you do that, a format menu will appear on the lower part. Select the file(s) you want to import and change the format from Quicktime to GIF.”
can you reload problematic footage with the GIF setting or do you have to import a new clip and replace footage?
btw, on a mac pro 2.6 quad, 4 gigs of ram, OS 10.4.9, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, qtime7.1.5, i have stuttering, freezing frames, bad audio sync, 20 sec delays on playback of previews, general slow performance, difficulties with apple photo jpeg movies, no audio solo, purging every five minutes, and 1 minute quits to restart. it renders simple stuff quickly with the multi-processors on but is actually quite difficult to do real work with, toss-up whether it’s any better or worse than afx7 on the intel mac right now, both are pretty bad. it does have a puppet tool and they did say it was beta.

May 3, 2007 at 7:48 am in reply to: AE7 CRASH CANNOT CREATE 1280 X 720 IMAGE BUFFERif you haven’t already, read graham jones posts HOW TO USE AE7 WITH INTEL MACS. (there is a link at the top of the page above frequently asked ?’s) sounds like it might be the standard memory difficulties with the intel macs and afx7. his suggestions helped me a lot with this kind of mem problem. if you can do without non adobe plugs consider the afx8 beta download. it actually works great and has been very solid for me on intel quad.
