there is a preference under FILES called “save polygons for melange”. i found that this can progressively increase file size (and the time it takes to save files) the way you are describing. i think melange checkbox is only needed for exporting to certain non-c4d apps, not sure if AFX needs it. try und checking it and see if the problem persists.

are you using a fresnel in the reflection channel? if so try removing it, might help.

March 10, 2015 at 11:37 pm in reply to: Multiframe Processing Questions

i have 32 gigs of ram and a fast external drive and even when afx is the only app running i get the same problem, initializing forever and then sits there. for me this happens with even light comps of only a few layers and without audio. search the problem and it seems widespread. tried many variations on settings but haven’t been able to get multi-processor previews to work correctly or quickly. it’s just not useable. eventually found the only solution was to just turn of multi-processing for previewing and only use it for render function. seems pretty weak on adobe’s part that the mp previewing is basically non-functional. hardly seems right to still blame it on yosemite OS, which has been out for six months, i would have expected adobe to come up with a solution to address a problem like this by now. (and is removing the audio from a project really a practical working solution to get MP previews that should just work without dorking around?) seems like adobe should fix this and release it quickly. the speed of addressing functional software fixes like this seems like it was one of adobe’s selling points with the CC cloud. the whole afx preview model is creaky, slow and frustratingly inefficient anyway but not being able to use multi-processors for previewing just compounds the inherent problems afx has.

with C4D open go to top menu bar:
    Edit/Open Preferences Folder/Cinema4D R15_/prefs/cache
(the edit preferences folder button is lower left on the C4D preferences panel)
on mac you can also go /Users/name/Library/Preferences/MAXON/CINEMA 4D_/prefs/cache

  • thanks kevin, that’s reassuring. wondered about the retina GPU use for that same reason vince. inclined to go for the reg HD screen for now. thanks.

  • What the F were you thinking (or drinking) when making such a tasteless and wildly inappropriate comment? Shame on you Mr. LaRonde.

  • not sure if you have this worked out already but this is another approach that might help you from yader on vimeo (he’s got some great tutorials): https://vimeo.com/67920323

not sure how you would build those in c4d but maybe take a look at TOPMOD, a free modeling program, it has functions that allow you to create those kind of meshes and export them as .obj’s. has lots of interesting features and easy to create things like the sierpinski pyramid. its here: https://code.google.com/p/topmod/

try putting your plane in a cloth nurb, you can add thickness in the controls. you might not need to add any subdivision, it can be set to 0 and the thickness setting will still work.

hey adam, in that file you posted the dynamic spline, which i can see moving, doesn’t seem to work with the sweep nurb. the sweep nurb sits static in the original position until the inheritance effector kicks in and then it morphs the sweep to the helix. the way you set it up shouldn’t the sweep be moving dynamically along with the spline before the inheritance kicks in. i’m looking at it in C4d 12.
