my old powermac is dying, looking for a replacement and thinking the new iMac might work out. i’m trying to understand the current video card issues with premier and after effects. the new 27″ 4.0GHz Retina iMac only offers the AMD Radeon R9 M290X or R9 M295X video card, nothing from Nvidia. on the Adobe compatibility chart under Windows Open CL they do list an AMD Radeon R9 290 as being compatible but no mac compatible AMD Radeon version is listed that i can see. anyone know if those retina iMac Radeon video cards would be compatible for premier GPU acceleration, or for that matter for after effects ray traced 3D renders.

    Hi guys,
Any NVIDIA or AMD GPU with over 1 GB VRAM should enable Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration.

    Hope that helps,
    Kevin

I’d also like to point out that in my experience the retina displays eat of lot of GPU resources. So, if you’re happy with an HD display, you may be better off not going with retina.
