AFX CS3 8.0.1 does shows up on my adobe updater and says it “addresses issues with MP4 import and export. in addition this update addresses OpenGL issues on supported video cards.” not a mystery update but still one i’m reluctant to mess with in light of your ram preview issues. any further insights into that little gem.

i’d like to use open GL but not being able to ram preview is pretty severe upgrade bug, kind of makes it unuseable doesn’t it? did you find a work-around for that or were you able to uninstall the upgrade back to 8.0? just wondering, anyone else upgrade with that same no ram preview problem?

well, you’ve heard from management. it’s obviously a question of what the market will bear, how much you want the job, and how far you want to bend over for beanybabies, but if you’re doing the design work and the compositing on your own system, (and you’re good), look ’em in the eye, don’t blink, and tell ’em $800/day. if they want you to work at their location on their machines, (generally this involves mayhem, chit-chat and BS) tell ’em $1000/day. stay away from bargainbabies paying “pros” $50/hour, especially in san francisco which is one of the most expensive markets on the planet. that’s about half what you should charge as a pro to make a decent living. of course if you blink, or you’re not good enough, or just need the gig ‘cuz the kids need shoes, get in the car and drive an hour, crawl into the cube under the watchful eye of the “creative director/owner” and slave away. you’ll apparently be much more productive 🙂

take a look in effects under simulation. there’s a plug-in called shatter. pretty sure it’s an adobe plug-in for afx pro. look under the shapes tab, you can choose puzzle. should work nicely for you.

haven’t used it much myself but from what i’ve seen you might be able to use stills or cutouts and the new puppet tool in afx8 to animate the dancer. wouldn’t be “realistic” but may be worth taking a look at.

no surprise the mpeg2 wouldn’t work. personally i use animation codec qtime for materials with no problem but have seen several recomendations from wise old bulls at the cow that tiff or pict sequences are actually the better/faster rendering route.

  • the consensus and the docs seems to be remove and add-back pulldown. the thing i’ve noticed with removing the pull down and adding it back, aside from the difficulties you get if there is a change in the pulldown order of the clip-which frequently happens with stock footage, is that if i do something like a text crawl over that 23.976 footage when you rerender it out at 29.97 with re-introduced pulldown the footage looks ok (as OK as it did with the original pulldown) but the crawl looks funky from the start and stop nature of adding back 6 dup frames every second to the afx motion.

  • just wondering, why even remove and add back the 3;2 pulldown. maybe i’m missing something but i don’t think it’s really necessary is it? the transfer is done at 29.97, final cut is at 29.97. i’d say ignore the pulldown, do your afx stuff in a 29.97 comp and export back out at 29.97.

    “Unfortunately in C4D v9.1 there is no “Layerset . . .”

you sure? it’s in my 9.5. perhaps they changed it after 9.1. it was a bit confusing to me as it’s down 3 menus in the material editor. maybe take another look.

when you double clik the material it opens the material editor pane, right? select the alpha check box, then click on the center tab to the right of that column (it should have the pshop file name you loaded on it, it’s next to the “Texture” small arrow button and right below the pre-mult check box), this should take you to the shader pane of the alpha. (it will show Basic-Shader-Animation at the top, make sure Shader is hilited) and under “Shader Properties”, right below the sampling (MIP etc) button and the file name field there’s a “Select” button for Layerset, which takes you to the “Choose Layerset” pane.

regardless, in all things C4D i would defer to lennart’s knowlege and suggestions about prepping the artwork in pshop.
