i get the best quality and small file size for the mac using quicktime pro exporting the h264 codec. even at medium quality setting it looks quite good. you can also use the adobe media encoder exporting h264 from premier.

maybe take a look at the cel renderer under post effects of the effects tab of render settings. it’s limited but i think it’s standard and will give you outlines of objects and matte colors if that”s what you need.

i noticed it works a little different without the coffee expression. without coffee the keyed element stays unchanged in the foreground when you move/rotate the cam but if you change focal length and zoom on the scene you’ll zoom on the foreground element also and it will change. with the coffee expression the keyed foreground element is unaffected by camera move/rotate OR focal changes, which for my purposes is a good thing since i wanted the keyed video to stay in the screen position where it was shot no matter what i do with the c4d cam.

both are useful and either way you can see the keyed foreground video live when you move on the timeline, which is quite handy. thanks for all the info.

thanks nolan. i don’t really understand coffee but that works great, just what i wanted to do. the thread where he posted that file is almost 3 years old. i’m kind of surprised there isn’t a simple, non-coffee way to do that in R10. it’s a very useful thing.

i could sort of get the realtime view of the keyed video by applying the vid+alpha to a large plane using front projection with a “look at camera” tag on the plane, but that has some drawbacks depending on where the camera is. his set-up is much better, works like a charm. (thanks rui batista.)

  • you might want to look at the vanishing point plug-in that comes with photoshop CS3. i believe it does just what you’re looking for and allows you to export the 3D info and pshop layers as a comp directly to AFX8 where you can then do camera moves on the “3D” still. pretty nifty. there’s a demo on working with vanishing point in afx and photoshop at the adobe design center:

that was an irritating feature of afx 7. no way around it. it’s fixed in afx 8 i believe.

when using the open file or file merge method that adam mentions, aside from using illustrator 8 format, the other thing is to make sure the hierarchical check box is checked in the extrude nurb attributes, otherwise no visible extrude.

not sure about the flash compatibility but i believe most of the apple site vids are using the h.264 quicktime codec.

keynote is actually quite amazing. i just finished a show that was 3840×720 projected onto 3 screens over 40 feet wide. it was played back live from keynote on the mac. i rendered one 10 gig 3840×720 square pixel movie from afx in animation codec then exported it from qtime pro as h264 at best quality. looked great, worked fine, very moderate file size. btw, they also used the apple pro-rez codec to play back other movies of the same 3840×720 dimension from keynote. it would be nice to do it, but i wasn’t able to successfully export or render h264 directly from afx at those dimensions.

not sure if the open GL is really helping anything but i did notice that if you look at the info panel when you do a ram preview it always takes a couple of seconds before starting the preview render to re-save the project, each and every time you ram preview even if you just saved and even with auto save off. don’t think it did that before.
