    Hi there

Basically ive got some kind of cut out drawn buildings that ive made in photoshop and i want them to be 3d in AE. i know that i could do this all manually…but i was just wondering if there is anyway of using the 3d extruder tool to do it, so basically they are just made 3d blocks….i know u can do it with shapes and text, but can u do it with normal layers, or does anyone have any tips on how this could be acheived?

    cheers!

Aharon does an interesting thing with Z Space and buildings here:

Don’t know if that will help.

    Hey Mike

Thanks for that, much appreciated. Do you know where i could find the project files for that tutorial? i just want to see exactly how he did the building effect as he only goes over it very briefly in the tutorial…

    cheers

Check that page again. The link to the files is just above the link to play the movie.

you might want to look at the vanishing point plug-in that comes with photoshop CS3. i believe it does just what you’re looking for and allows you to export the 3D info and pshop layers as a comp directly to AFX8 where you can then do camera moves on the “3D” still. pretty nifty. there’s a demo on working with vanishing point in afx and photoshop at the adobe design center:

Try making each building out of 3D solids in its own composition. Here are a couple of hints:

-Use dimensions for your solids that are easy to remember/replicate like 200p x 600p for the 4 walls and 200p x 200p for the ceiling and floor.

-Move the anchor points for all of your solids to [0,0] to make the math of lining things up easier on yourself.

    -Rotate your layers 90
