JVC had a 3 chip camcorder that had an optional encoder on the bottom that would compress the dv footage for live web-casting in real time. They used a software program on a pc to do the switching and feed the signal out to the web. All proprietory.

There is no way to feed 4 inputs into a mac to use the fcp system live, you have to capture one at a time on the hdd then you can do a mix from that.
The old amiga video toasters do this and they are cheap on ebay ($100.00ish). They are composite only but digital and they look good. The toaster card has 4 inputs. There are lots of effects too. Next cheapest is the panasonic mixers, wj-12; wj-30 or wj-50 models and the videonix mixers do the job too. The new newtek units will encode and stream it over the web at the same time, $5k for firewire and $7k for component.

(1) Adding one internal drive will be the cheapest and simplest solution for you. DV is roughly 5 minutes per GB so if you need that much space, simply adding one 500gb drive will do it. Currently the 300gb drives are the cheapest per gb (you will pay twice that per gb for one 500gb drive). but you don’t need to purchase anything else for your current needs. Just slide it into the bay and connect the wires, no brackets or cards or extra wires are needed. Make sure you get a drive that is 7200 rpm or faster.
(2) Further down the road an external firewire drive would be handy and simple to add in. You can move data around with them easily.
(3) If you want some serious storage the external sata enclosures as mentioned above are hard to beat for performance and cost. A 2, 3, or 4 bay enclosure will allow you to have a ton of storage in raid configurations for safety or throughput. You can buy extra caddys ($20.00) for them to so you can keep extra drives on the shelf for hot swapping as needed. This system will take up one pci-x slot in the computer. Although it would be nice to fill it with 500gb drives you can save money by using cheap 250gb or 300gb drives in it as you can swap them as they fill up.
Any way you go you can’t loose by adding the internal drive into the mac first.

Yes, and between the edit points on long transitions as well as any scene with a lot of movement suchas fast pans (sports) tracking shots (shooting a galloping horse from a moving vehicle). These are places the background can block up really bad.

I’ve been considering the Radion 800xt for my mac too. Hope it’s not an issue with the card, it is the one thing you both are using.

I heard Sony was dropping PVM but would continue manufacturing BVM series. I hope there is no new news to the contrary. Sony crt’s are the best.

Just thought I’d add, most pro audio boards have built in recorders or the sound guy routes the audio to a recorder. You should be able to get a cd of the mix from the band.
