is it possible to use FCP in a live broadcast setting to mix cameras?….
….just got back from a shoot where we would shoot and edit during the day and then show the video at night as highlights. Our team was also doing some live shots and broadcasting on large screens in house. We used a switcher which would pitch to black and then switch to a different camera instead of doing a direct cut. One guy who was at this conference was talking about one video guy in the past that would use his computer (could be wrong there) to switch camera shots. If I’m not mistaken, I know that FCP can do multiple camera edits (I think), but is it possible/advisable to use FCP to do in house broadcast as such? Thanks,

Nope, FCP is an editing workstation only, not a live switcher. NewTek makes a computer based switcher for the PC.

JVC had a 3 chip camcorder that had an optional encoder on the bottom that would compress the dv footage for live web-casting in real time. They used a software program on a pc to do the switching and feed the signal out to the web. All proprietory.

There is no way to feed 4 inputs into a mac to use the fcp system live, you have to capture one at a time on the hdd then you can do a mix from that.
The old amiga video toasters do this and they are cheap on ebay ($100.00ish). They are composite only but digital and they look good. The toaster card has 4 inputs. There are lots of effects too. Next cheapest is the panasonic mixers, wj-12; wj-30 or wj-50 models and the videonix mixers do the job too. The new newtek units will encode and stream it over the web at the same time, $5k for firewire and $7k for component.

YES, it can be done! Not with FCP, but check this out: https://www.varasoftware.com/products/wirecast/
This is a mac based, firewire fed, full blown switcher/effects gen/ and, get this, internet streaming server! Did I mention it only costs $500?
We have it set up in a small insert stage where it takes the firewire feed from three small Sony cameras. Audio comes in off of an outboard mixer, but goes into the wirecast via firewire. Would I hang a network TV broadcast on this? No. However, for certain controlled situations, this can be a very slick solution.
