  • Why are my monitors burning? Why?

Posted by Kevin Reiner on June 14, 2006 at 2:37 pm

Working in FCP 5 on a G5 with dual Apple display. Radeon X800 XT card.

I have been noticing that windows and images left static for a short time (over 5 minutes) burn their image into my Apple Dual Display monitors. My system is only 1-year_old. I did some tests to issolate the problem:

    1. Brought the monitors to a different work station and the problem did not occur.
    2. Used different monitors on my workstation, and the problem still showed up.

So I don’t believe that the monitors are to blame. Could it be the video card or some other componenet in my G5? Could it be an electrical problem (we have been having gound loop issues lately and I am unaware if this can cause problems in monitors.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Actually I am having the same issue with my G5 to some extent. It is when I use finally cut or Motion and use an effect. It is totally intermittent and I have not been able to isolate the problem. It happened with 2 video cards for me, the stock ATI 9600 XT (I think) and my newly upgraded x800 xt card.
I suspect it is something going on with the new quicktime.

Does the problem go away after you shut down for a while and come back to the project? This would stall the problem for me although nothing fixed it.

    Sure, why not?

Our problem doesn’t seem to be associated with a specific application. Its an additive problem – gets worse over time. I could have After Effects, FCP and a Safari open and all of the windows will leave a light purple ghosting effect. It goes away when I shut down, but immediately starts to build up again as windows open.

Well then, that would be a totally different problem.

Hopefully the gurus here can help us both out. Or lead us in the right direction.

Something to rule out… video cables. I have 2 crt’s connected with 2 x 20ft. vga cables and I get a very slight ghosting on them. (Very minimal)

I know from previous experience with other systems that daisy chaining vga cables together will cause similar problems that you describe.

    Hope that this helps!

I’ve been considering the Radion 800xt for my mac too. Hope it’s not an issue with the card, it is the one thing you both are using.

The card is not the problem. I am thinking I might have to reinstall motion and or final cut.

I think we are having two separate issues.

As for the card I would recommend it if you want to get something affordable. Other than the fact I had to search long and hard to hook it up with two vga monitors (it uses an adc port) I like it a lot.

I was having these issues before the card, I actually got the card thinking it might solve them. I am really beginning to think it is QT 7.1.

Actually, I think it might be the monitors. We’ve just ordered a whole load of G5s; most have the 30″ display, which is fine, but we’ve got a couple of machines with dual 23″ displays, and they’re showing the same kind of burn in. I’ll try one on one of our PCs and report back.

    Thanks,

    Tom
