Apple 30″ LCD
Posted by Ernie Santella on June 14, 2006 at 4:05 pmAnybody using the Apple 30″ display with FCP? I was thinking of getting one to replace my aging dual 20″ers.
Can somebody tell me how long the attached DVI cable is from the monitor? I have my G5 in a seperate room, right next to the editbay – Thanks!

June 14, 2006 at 4:16 pmI’ve been using a 30 for about 6 months now. I was going to go with 2 20s but got a refurbished from Apple instead. I love it. I have tons of different window arrangements saved and it works very well. The cable is maybe 6 feet? Can’t measure exactly as it’s buried. i hope to get a Matrox MXO to hook to the other DVI port that is empty now and get use out of it. My only problem with the 30 is it put out quite a bit of heat! That’s a lot of surface area.

June 14, 2006 at 4:22 pmI’ve been using the 30 for about a month and it’s excellent. You’ll really like all the screen real estate – really frees your mind up to be more creative.
The cable is a multi-purpose cable that contains power, DVI, firewire and USB so unless Apple makes a specific extension you’ll need to have it near the Mac. You might be able to add something like a Decklink Extreme which can drive the 30.

June 14, 2006 at 10:49 pmThe biggest complaint I hear with the 30″ is people lose their mouse cursor all the time.

Michael was right on about Gefen: https://www.gefen.com/kvm/cables/appledlcombocable.jsp
$300 though.

June 15, 2006 at 5:47 amI heard a complaint from my brother that two 23″ Cinemas was just too wide with a lot of back and forth motion. I went with a single 30″ for our systems at work. So far it’s working out fine.
