  • Matthew is right on – you can encode a DVD straight from a 23.98 file. This is an acceptable frame rate for a DVD and the player will add the pulldown on playback.

I’m a fairly new Matrox MXO user and absolutely love it. I would quickly recommend it..

But beware about Shane’s warning. It still will not work with the newest MacBook Pros with the Nvidia chipset. You can read all about this on their forum so beware of this before making this decision. If you have an ATI card you’re fine.

Go to Sequence > Render Selection > and make sure that “needs render” is selected. Also make sure Needs Render is selected for the render all setting too.

    January 23, 2008 at 5:49 pm in reply to: Colorista 1.0.1 ?

Check out this help page from redgiantsoftware. It gives you instructions on how to check which version you currently have installed and also directions and link on how to upgrade to 1.0.1:

    https://www.rgsupportzone.com/colorista#q285

You need to click the question “I just re-installed Colorista and/or Colorista is crashing when opening on multiple Mac platforms [Colorista v1.0.1 update].”

It should be easier than having to find the plugin and showing info in the finder… but that seems to be the only way.

Howabout using the Basic 3D filter then – that way the rotation is also happening as an effect. You can get the flip by setting the X axis rotation to -180.

January 23, 2008 at 6:22 am in reply to: Final Cut 6 – Editing with varying frame rates

The short answer is yes, you can. There may be some big stumbling blocks however depending on how much you’re going to have to mix and what the purpose of all the multiple frame rates was.

Is the majority of the film shot at 25fps and the 50 and 60 footage was shot as overcrank material to be slowed down to 25? If that’s the case, then that is probably the best case scenario and you should be able to work in a 25 frame rate timeline without any problems. If, however, stuff was shot at 60i and it needs to be mixed with an equal mix of 25 and 50 stuff, then you may have some headaches on the horizon. I guess the more information you have the better.

But to answer your question on whether or not it can be done in Final Cut – the answer is yes. Biggest thing to find out first is what the majority of the stuff is shot in and that will likely be your timeline setting.

January 23, 2008 at 5:05 am in reply to: Capturing HDV from Z1P using FCP

Make sure that your camera is set up to be outputting HDV via firewire and not DV (in the Sony’s menus) and also make sure that you have set your Easy Setup in Final Cut Pro to HDV 1080i60 so that the proper firewire communication is set up. It sounds like maybe you haven’t done these things.

Hopefully that solves it for you.

January 22, 2008 at 8:49 pm in reply to: HDCAM master 23.98 to 29.97

If you’re working in a 23.98 timeline, then Final Cut can automatically add the pulldown necessary to bring the footage up to 29.97. In the RT popup menu on the left side of the timeline you will see the option for different pulldown patterns to be added. There you can choose a standard 3:2 or an advanced 2:3:3:2 or whatever you’re looking for. Then you can lay off directly to an HDCAM deck with the pulldown added.

January 22, 2008 at 6:53 pm in reply to: Render Options in FCP

I do graphics from after effects all of the time and I’m losing no crispness or definition in Final Cut. I’m usually working with DVCPRO HD 1080i60 timelines and my graphics are rendered too in the animation codec from After Effects with alpha channels.

I would recommend using a straight alpha channel instead of premultiplied from AE – my Final Cut system seems to handle these better.
