FCP unexpectedly quits on opening
Posted by John Lynch on January 21, 2008 at 10:27 pmFCP unexpectedly quits on opening. It gets as far as “loading video effects: vectorize color” and quits. I have tried trashing the preferences, plist, and FCP Rescue, all to no avail. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

January 21, 2008 at 10:47 pmThe only time this has happened to me where trashing prefs didn’t help was because I had upgraded Final Cut and there was a Plugin that wasn’t allowing it to start up. Have you recently upgraded or do you have any third party plugins installed in your plugin folder? Even if you haven’t upgraded recently, it might not hurt to remove the plugins from your plugin folder (copy them to the desktop or something in the mean time) to see if that helps. If that does help then you can try adding the plugins back one by one to see what the culprit is.
Check Library > Plugins > FX Plug
Library > Application Support > Final Cut Pro System Support
User > Library > Preferences > Final Cut Pro User Data > Plugins* * *

January 21, 2008 at 11:09 pmI haven’t upgraded or added any plugins. FCP was running fine the last time I used it (early last week). I tried pulling the plugin folders out of each location suggested but that didn’t help. Although there were triangles by each plugin folder, there was nothing in either of them. As soon as I launched FCP the folders reappeared in those locations and FCP quit when it got to the “loading video effects: vectorize color”. This may be the culprit, but I can’t find where it is located.

January 21, 2008 at 11:15 pmMaybe that is indeed somehow the culprit…
I did find this effect in HD > Users > Shared > Motion > Library > Filters > Stylize
Try temporarily moving this file into a different folder and see what happens to your launch.

January 22, 2008 at 6:41 pmYou might want to boot off of the install CD and try repairing permissions, or use Disk Warrior.
Also, remove any 3rd party fonts and see if you can load.
and finally, try double clicking a project that isnt whatever is loading to start the application. Sometimes a corrupt project will cause that and i could see if you are clicking the FCP icon and its loading the same project and that project is corrupt, causing the app to crash.

He said he’s already tried trashing the preference files and when he does that Final Cut will no longer remember what the last program was to auto load it.
The other options are worth attempting.

January 22, 2008 at 8:08 pmI have repaired permissions, run Tech Tool 4 Pro to rebuild the HD directory and optimized the startup HD over night. I also tried to open 3 other projects and FCP quits everytime while loading the video effects, usually at “Vectorize Color.” At this point should I just reinstall FCP Studio and update software from there? Is an uninstall FCP an option? Thanks for all of the previous suggestions.

January 22, 2008 at 8:10 pmYeah, this might be a good time to reinstall it.
