  • HDCAM master 23.98 to 29.97

Posted by Steven Escobar on January 22, 2008 at 8:41 pm

I have a feature that was shot in HDCAM 23.98 and now I have a TV deal but according to their specs, they want a master that is HDCAM 29.97. Instead of having to master at 23.98 first then make a new master at 29.97 is there a way I can do it in FCP?

If I copy the sequence and put it into a 29.97 timeline, I know I’ll probably have to render but will it make a difference in the final output quality? There’s an quality check from the network so I don’t want to delay any payment if there’s something wrong.

If anyone has any input, will you give me some suggestions on how I can do this the correct way but maybe as a cheaper solution?

    Thanks

If you’re working in a 23.98 timeline, then Final Cut can automatically add the pulldown necessary to bring the footage up to 29.97. In the RT popup menu on the left side of the timeline you will see the option for different pulldown patterns to be added. There you can choose a standard 3:2 or an advanced 2:3:3:2 or whatever you’re looking for. Then you can lay off directly to an HDCAM deck with the pulldown added.

If you have either a AJA or Blackmagic card in your computer, you can change your output settings to be 29.97 and when you make your master, it will automatically add the 2:3 pulldown for you.

Do NOT, however, pull the 23.98 clip into a 29.97 timeline. FCP will add pulldown, but it will be 2:2:2:4, which will stutter and is incorrect for the application.

Pull it into a 23.98 timeline, and then set your Kona or BM video output to 1080i29.97. During the edit-to-tape, FCP will only then apply the right kind of pulldown, on the fly.

We always create our final HD master in 23.98. That is the Universal Mastering Format. You can create other HD delivery masters from that and also all subsequent PAL and NTSC standard def delivery masters. You may also want to check with your distributor to see all possible deliverables that need to be made.

if you master 23.98Psf to HDCam it’s a dub from that master to get to 29.97. simply a setting on the HDCam deck for playout (23.98 PD) PD stands for pulldown. It’ll playback 1080i at this point and pass 29.97tc. If your deliverable requires DF TC you’ll have to prestripe an HDCam tape and do a machine to machine edit, if NDF is acceptable it’s a strait dub. make sure A frame24 and A frame30 is set right in the menu so the TC will be the same every second on the second (NDF)
