  • HDV won’t render in Final Cut 5

Posted by Tim Young on January 23, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I am working on a project in final cut 5 that incorporates several different type of video (MPEG-4, H.264, DV, Photo-JPEG, and HDV) in a DV sequence with multiple video tracks and split screen. Everything was working fine and had been for several days, but then randomly I started having a problem rendering the HDV files. It was telling me the footage was unrendered (red line over it), but when I tried to render it, the render window popped up and immediately disappeared, leaving the file unrendered. I switched the Unlimited RT, changing the line above it to orange, but that just made the image freeze during the section that in Safe RT was unrendered (red line above).

Re-importing the HDV files did not work. In fact, now when I try to open any of the HDV footage, it will not even display in the viewer. I can hear the audio, but no image whatsoever. Also, the thumbnail image will no longer appear on the clip when it is in the timeline.

I tried moving them to a new sequence, which did not work. When I tried setting the new sequence to any HDV setting, it told me “Video compressor HDV is not found. Please check that the hardware is present and enabled for this compressor. Setting the video compressor to animation.”

Here are the details on my computer. It is a PowerMac G4, which I recently upgraded from 256 MB of RAM to 2 GB of RAM. I also recently instatlled a second internal hard drive and a second disk drive. After doing these upgrades, I installed Mac OSX version 10.5.1, then re-installed Final Cut. I had no problems with Final Cut during the first 2 days of this new set up, and then suddenly the above problems started occurring.

I apologize for such a long post, but I didn’t want to leave out any important details. Thanks.

Go to Sequence > Render Selection > and make sure that “needs render” is selected. Also make sure Needs Render is selected for the render all setting too.

I’m having the same issue. I have tried to reset the scratch disks, not sure if I did that the right way (any tips would be appreciated). I’m using a macbook 2ghz, 2gb intel core duo, FCP5 trying to edit footage shot on a Z1U. The footage was given to me by a friend who transferred it and it’s a .mov file. I can see everything i’ve edited so far, but the footage will not render, and I can’t seem to view the other footage in the view window. Any tips, help would be appreciated!
