The Easy Setup should be HDV 1080i60 Firewire (not basic) and that should do it. It’s pretty simple.

If you’re doing a fade in and out (to black), one way you can approach this is to add a black slug on the topmost video layer for the duration you want the fade to black to be. Then you can keyframe the opacity so that it starts 0% opaque, goes to 100% opaque, then back to 0%. I use this method a lot as effects and transitions can give you unwanted effects when you have a comp with multiple layers, as your experience shows.

  • This is the obvious response but are you sure the canvas and viewer aren’t set to wireframe mode? On the drop down button on top of these windows make sure they’re set to image or image+wireframe. You can also hit w to cycle through these options…

The UltraSharps use S-IPS panel technology which is going to be of a much higher quality than the lower end cheaper monitors which are usually using TN panels. This is significant to the video editor or graphic designer who cares about true color representation and fidelity. As Walter’s experience shows, you will definitely lose quality when going with a TN display. If you’re considering Dell’s I would ONLY ever look at the UltraSharps. You might not see a big difference on the spec sheets, but it’s there.

Hey Walter – ever thought of doing a tutorial on the steps you take to encode and burn a blu-ray disc with acceptable quality from beginning to end? It seems like you went through a lot of trial by fire’s and still to this date I think you’re the only person I’ve read on this forum that’s actually producing blu-ray discs with any sort of regularity. I think it would be a big hit especially since the choice of adopting blu-ray is becoming much easier now with all the recent things happening int he format wars.

    Just wondering.

This isn’t possible. You’re right in thinking about the MXO – I’m currently using this. But it’s still going to require an extra display.

January 18, 2008 at 12:13 am in reply to: Dell Monitor Users

I’ve used Dell UltraSharp’s for years and have always thought they were solid monitors. I’m using 2 20″ Dell Ultrasharp’s and a 23″ Cinema Display for monitoring with a Matrox MXO at home and think they are all great monitors. My Cinema Display does get much brighter than both my 2005FPW and 2007WFP though… not sure why.

  • I can’t understand how the method you’re using to get around the problem clips where the pulldown wasn’t getting removed would result in something that looks good. Taking a 29.97 clip with pulldown and simply exporting it as 23.98 from Final Cut should not remove the pulldown properly and I haven’t to imagine there would be some strange visual inaccuracies in the image. But you’re not noticing any problems with it?

As far as your first steps with the 24PA footage – yeah as long as you get the pulldown removed you should be able to do a film out from that footage. It’s no HD but I’ve seen films shot with it before.
