Best Monitor for Under $400
I’m buying a Mac Pro and looking at the Dell E248WFP. Any thoughts on it? What do I lose if I don’t get the Ultra Sharp? Should I go for a smaller monitor w/ more functionality? Thoughts? Thanks.

Terrible. We’re returning ours. Could never get the blacks to look anything other than crushed. We have the 2407WFP and were about to go ahead and order another one, but we found a 24″ Samsung in Costco that is working out quite well. Still not exactly the same quality as the 2407WFP, but much better than the Dell.

The UltraSharps use S-IPS panel technology which is going to be of a much higher quality than the lower end cheaper monitors which are usually using TN panels. This is significant to the video editor or graphic designer who cares about true color representation and fidelity. As Walter’s experience shows, you will definitely lose quality when going with a TN display. If you’re considering Dell’s I would ONLY ever look at the UltraSharps. You might not see a big difference on the spec sheets, but it’s there.

do you think I would be better off with the 22″ Dell Ultrasharp? I’d like to avoid spending $700 on a monitor if I can. What do you recommend?

I would probably go for the smaller ultrasharp model. Your eyes will thank you. You can always add the 24″ later as a second monitor.

Ive been looking at the Dell Ultrasharp 2407 too, but what strikes me is AFAIK all these computer monitors do not show inerlaced footage as interlaced, but only show progressive… so if you happen to have your field order messed up, it will be hard or impossible to notice, till you watch it on an interlaced monitor.
SO
Wouldnt an LCD TV be the best option for low cost monitoring?
If so, do you have any suggestions for a 24 inch monitor that shows interlaced footage as interlaced?

Only if you want to spend at least $2,000 for a TV Logic LCD.
If you want to simply check interlacing order, especially for standard def, simply go to any electronics store and pick up the cheapest CRT TV you can buy. Any of those will show you if something is out of whack in interlace order.

Hi Walt
yeah, ive got a Sony PAL component monitor already, but thats SD, I was thinking to be able to monitor 1920×1080 interlaced.I guess I could have some down converter for the fields thing, and a Dell to see a pretty picture.
