I’ve worked in DVCPROHD 1080i60 on MacBook’s before and they handled it pretty decently. I’ve never captured.. but if you have the machines I’d say give it a try. It should probably work without any problems if you’re over firewire. But I haven’t done it.

Yeah I’m pretty sure the Blackmagic won’t display fields in the same way that the MXO does. And also from an engineering standpoint, I think the MXO is the only device currently on the market that’s going to give you broadcast accurate display from a DVI port.

There’s no question that the quality suffers – but depending on the project the rough look might actually work. I used YouTube videos to composite on screen multiple news clips all happening at once and overlapping each other – and even though the quality started out low I added some effects and further degraded the images and it ended up looking great.

So it really just depends on how they intend to be used.

I’m not too sure if you can open the image sequence and save without a recompression – I know you sure you can save to the format of your choice. I think it’s something worth trying at least to see if it works.

Would turning the image sequence into a quicktime work for what you’re trying to do?

I don’t have a lot of experiences with image sequences in FCP but I have used Quicktime Pro to open an image sequence and save it as a Quicktime file. You can do this from Quicktime Pro with the Open > Image Sequence command.

Yeah – the cinema display when hooked up to a Matrox MXO WILL indeed display fields – I know because I use this at home. It looks just like it does on my $5,000 Sony Broadcast HD monitor at the office… you can see the field flicker when parking on an interlaced frame and everything.

There are sites out there that will download and convert the YouTube videos for you. I actually did this for a trailer to a documentary that I was cutting…

Check out https://www.vixy.net – it allows you to type in a YouTube URL and it will convert it to quicktime or different formats for you. You can then work with this in Final Cut.

January 18, 2008 at 8:29 pm in reply to: WACOM Bamboo and Mouse?

Yeah the mighty mouse should function without any problems with your tablet plugged in. I use the Intuos3 from WACOM and am constantly going back and forth between tablet and mouse. I don’t think ANYBODY actually uses the mouse that comes with the tablets… those are generally of low quality in my opinion.

Shane Ross did a great review here on the COW about the MXO and the Cinema Display. I am currently a Matrox MXO user and have it hooked up to a 23″ Apple Cinema Display. The results are great – this setup gives you a broadcast accurately display and the price is right.

One thing to note though – it won’t work with an Apple 30″ Cinema display. You need 23″. The box is designed for the 23″ and won’t drive the 30″ because of it’s need to have a dual link DVI port.

Does anyone know if when you do this method you no longer have Quicktime Pro? Or is Quicktime Pro reloaded back on too?

    Just curious.
