We need a sticky FAQ! Any idea if this can be done? Do you have any pull with the forum administrators?

Did the AVI come straight off the DSLR, or do you have to transcode it or use some proprietary software to get it onto the timeline?

Search the forum for “mark’s bit rate calculator” and you will see a number of posts relating on how to use it, plus where do download it. To get best quality, I would suggest 2 pass variable bit rendering, but the settings to use depend on your source material duration, audio quality etc.

Another option would be to import your render output into DVDA and get it to fit to disc, but it will force a re-render, and you will lose quality. I would suggest rendering once only (in Vegas)

Danny, do you need to select match media to project settings in the project properties as well? I believe it is unticked by default.

Your preview performance depends primarily on the CPU grunt of your system. HD is quite demanding compared to, say, DV.

You could invest in a product called Gearshift which creates proxy files to edit with which improve preview performance tremendously.

June 16, 2011 at 3:34 am in reply to: Will This PC Build Work With Vegas & HD?

The raptor drives are small in capacity, and without active cooling i.e. a fan, will literally have a meltdown. I have managed to burn out 2 of my 3 raptor drives in my old editing system in just under 3 years of use. They get hot enough to burn your hand.

Since your motherboard supports 2 x SATA 6GBs controllers, why not buy 2 x 1TB SATA3 Western Digital drives and still have some change left over from the price of 1 Raptor drive?

The video card does matter if you intend to render Sony AVC. Vegas takes advantage of CUDA cores on ATI and NVIDIA cards.

You did not mention what Operating system you were using. I would suggest going Windows x64, but you need to confirm that your plugins will work in the 64 bit version of Vegas.

Your i7 2600K has an integrated GPU that should nicely compliment your Nvidia card. Other users on this forum have reported blazing preview performance; however, if you intend to edit multi-cam using Ultimate S or Infiniticam, you may need to use Gearshift to create proxies. I edit multi-cam HDV and on my i7 970, preview cannot be set higher than good. Perhaps I should just buy Gearshift… .

Does exchanging 4GB RAM with 8GB RAM will visibly improve my workflow in Vegas 10 64-bit? Is it worth bothering?

Provided your motherboard and version of Windows x64 supports it, yes. Given the low cost of RAM nowadays, I would recommend installing between 12-16 GB.

It will not improve your workflow per se, but it will make swapping between programs speedier, plus you can run multiple instances of Vegas if needed. e.g. recently I was able to simultaneously render 3 x 60 minute HDV projects using 2 pass VBR render settings on my system.

This sounds like an interlacing issue. You set it to none. Set it to blend and re-render.
