I tend to use my DSLR for more creative shots where I want a cinematic look (shallow DoF) or need a fish eye lens, such as wedding shoots. I use it in situations where, if I mess up the shot, it is not going to ruin the job as well. It is not my main camera. I have HDV tape cameras for that. When I do use the DSLR, I have a camcorder running as well.

I can’t see what you are describing, but whenever I work with HDV PAL, I set interlacing to blend and my pixel aspect ratio to 1.333, upper field and I tick adjust source media to match project settings. I leave my pixel format alone at 8 bit.
I output to HDV1080i intermediary files and DVD using the DVDA PAL Widescreen and have not had any problems with these settings.

Or use Windows 7 x64 and the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro. Works for me.

My greatest challenge of DSLR’s is finding one that has a smooth zoom action, plus auto/follow focus can be an issue in tracking shots. My camera has a translucent mirror which makes for better AF.
Having a greater choice of low cost lenses makes DSLR’s quite appealing, plus on some DSLR’s it is possible to adjust exposure compensation for strongly backlit subjects, something I struggle to do easily on a Z1P or an FX1. Yes, I know there are presets, but sometimes they just need more tweaking.

John, can gearshift be used in combination with vasst ultimate s? As I frequently edit multicam hdv, once enabled, my preview cannot be set higher than preview, even on an i7 970 cpu. Would I have to render out proxies for each track?

You also consider using an external preview monitor if you have a 2nd video card/DVI connector. That pesky preview screen is just too small to edit in… .

Is the sound sometimes OK? I have experienced something similar in Vegas Pro 10c in which the video is fine, but the audio is broken up. If I shut down and restart Vegas, the problem would sometimes correct itself. I am editing HDV with some Vegas sound FX (filters).
When it happened, I even tried rendering out the file which subsequently contained these drop outs. In one instance, I got no audio, but when I closed down and restarted, the audio returned to normal and rendered as normal. What the?
I can’t recall if I reported it to Sony.
I am holding off using 10d until other mystery crashes being reported in this forum are resolved. Then again, maybe Vegas 11 is not far off 🙂

Does your rig include a monitor? That’s an oft overlooked component. As I edit in Vasst multi-cam, my timeline is on a 24″ monitor and my video preview sits on an external 32″ 1920 x 1080/50i LCD TV connected via HDMI. It certainly makes colour matching easier, plus I get to see what clients see.
