Posted by Tim Smith on June 7, 2011 at 1:48 pm

    Hello,

I just purchased this system and wanted to get an opinion from one of the experts here that I made a good decision(hopefully). I am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10

Its a HP Pavilion HPE h8xt

    -Windows 7 64 bit
    -Intel Core i7-2600 quadcore w/turbo-boost(up to 3.8GHz, 8MB cache)
    -8GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM[2 DIMMs]
    -1.5TB 7200 rmp SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    -500GB 7200 SATA 3Gb/s hard drive(to render to)
    -1GB DDR3 Radeon HD 6450
    -460w power supply

    Thanks,
    Tim

Ok, thanks. I had an option to upgrade the graphics card and choose not and stay with what was included. That was really my only concern.

If it was me, I’d make the 500 GB. the system drive and use the 1.5 TB. drive for all my video work.
If a beefier power supply (600 W. minimum) is an option, go for it.
If you ever add more drives (or anyth9ing else) to your system, you’ll find that it’s not strong enough for 100% reliable operation.

Overall, it looks fine. I agree with Mike that power supply is a little lacking. Might be OK for now but if you get a more powerful graphics cards or more hard drives you may see some instability.

Ok, thanks everyone! I really can’t wait to be able to edit without a choppy preview window!!!! 🙂

I’ve had twp HP computers where the stock PSU died. They ship with the minimum supply for the installed components. Add a second video card or more hard-disk drives, and you may well be on the road to cooking the PSU.

Does your rig include a monitor? That’s an oft overlooked component. As I edit in Vasst multi-cam, my timeline is on a 24″ monitor and my video preview sits on an external 32″ 1920 x 1080/50i LCD TV connected via HDMI. It certainly makes colour matching easier, plus I get to see what clients see.

    Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

Well, no. I already had a monitor that came with my older Dell, its 18″ I think. I didn’t want to spend any more money, the Box alone was $1000. I think its ok for me and my hobby. Mabey I’ll upgrade the monitor later.

Well I have my new system and was wondering about the performance. Its 95% good BUT still just a little laggy(worse in some spots). Is this expected? Task manger shows CPU running about 20% with spikes up to 30% while video is playing. I was expecting zero lag.

    Thoughts?

[Tim Smith] “Task manger shows CPU running about 20% with spikes up to 30% while video is playing. I was expecting zero lag.”

What is the format of the video files you are using? Some formats play smoother than others.
