Best Custom Built Computer for Vegas June 2011
Posted by Christopher Redmond on June 6, 2011 at 4:03 pmI’m looking to upgrade to a new system primarily for Vegas Pro 10. If you were to build a brand new system today trying to stay under a $3000 budget what would you buy and how would you set it up?
I know that there are several posts about builds in the forums, but technology changes so fast and with Vegas’s new releases I would like to know what processor/ motherboard / ram / graphic card / SSD? etc. would be top of the line today…
Thank you. (my first post to the cow after lurking for years)…

June 6, 2011 at 10:58 pmWith that kind of budget you can afford an SSD for your system drive along with alot of RAM. I have both and an ASUS motherboard with dual GTX-460 video cards. The CPU is an i7 960 @ 3.20GHz. I used 24GB of triple channel RAM. I like to keep my drives under 2GB and I have an assortment internal and external. I don’t have a raid, for the time being disk speed is not a bottleneck for me.
Hope this helps,
Jeff

Intel i7-2600K CPU’s offer good bang for buck value, as do AMD X6 1100 series CPU’s. The current i7’s are pricey in comparison. Both these CPU’s are in limited supply where I live.
A 64 bit Windows operating system coupled with Vegas x64 with anywhere between 12 and 24 GB of RAM wouldn’t hurt, although we would need to understand what media you intend to encode. You also need to check what plug-ins you intend to use as not all have 64 bit support. For DV, most dual core CPU’s with modest RAM requirements and a 32 bit operating system will suffice, but once you start getting into AVCHD, the gruntier the machine the better. I also edit using Vasst Ultimate S multicam, and once enabled, can drastically impact screen refresh rates. Even on my i7-920, I have to edit in preview mode because of preview lag. Hopefully the i7-970 I have on order now will alleviate this… .
You should consider getting at least 2 HDD’s, one for you o/s and the other for Vegas projects. I run 5 HDD’s: 1 for O/S, 2 mirrored RAID 1 for my projects and 2 in a RAID 0 configuration for my output.
An external USB 3.0 or eSATA drive for backups is also handy to have, but your motherboard would need to support it. I have an ASUS motherboard, and Gigabyte make some pretty decent boards.
If you are rendering Sony AVC, a good video card such as an NVidia 570 is a must have.
For $3K, you should be able to get a pretty decent system. You didn’t mention whether you needed a monitor.

August 14, 2011 at 8:38 pmI would like to build a computer based on Ken Mitchell’s “parts list”. It would be my first build. Do you have any tips for a first time builder? I plan to buy the parts as mentioned in the post, plus a firewire card. Any firewire card recommendations?

August 15, 2011 at 4:03 pmmost motherboards have firewire 400… if you want to add a firewire 800 card make sure that it works with windows7 64 or whatever os you decide to use..
