which i think would also have done the job. (and many others!)

have a look in your FCP audio filters.

in the AU filters there is one called “Pitch”

it’s there in FCP5, and it may be there in HD, too.

t will summon the “track” tool.

hold SHIFT, and it turns into the “All Tracks Forwards” tool.

i do a lot of dialogue finessing, too, cutting out and’s but’s etc.

simplest thing for me is to set my default audio transition to 1 or 2 frames.

if i get a tiny click on the cut, then the tiny disolve fixes it.

i’ve yet to resort to FCPs difficult subframe “editing”

to set default:
go to effects bin, audio transitions.
type in new duration,
control or right click on trans,
“Set default”

to add trans:
control or right click on cut,
add transition
or
select cut,
Option Apple T

if there are no TC breaks on the tape:

capture entire tape into one file,

open in SIMPLE VIDEO OUT

play back to camera with TC set to read EXTERNAL (can you do that with XL1?)

this app plays video, audio AND TC down the firewire!

everything you say is right, of course,

but i’m finding this to be rather frustrating at times.

i think the warning should have the option to proceed, and lose the affected transitions,
or cancel, so you can remove them manually, or change your in/outs.

a third and more advanced option could be for fcp to modify the in outs for you, leaving your transitions intact?

easiest way is to open the “source” column in the browser.

shows you the path.

getting there is manual in FCP4, but can be done now from within the app in FCP5.

got mine mapped to Shift R (for “reveal”, like in iTunes)

i was doing an online for someone the other day, and we had one clip that refused to trim.
we tried all the usual such as Making sequence clips independent,
and copying into a new project, but nothing worked.
the clip would even show up in supposedly off-line sequences.
then i noticed this “clip” had TC starting at zero, and no reel#
someone had stitched together a bunch of short captures in a sequence, re-building the original entire tape,
and exported it.
we corrected the TC, and gave it a reel#, and everything went fine after that.

if your media hasn’t originated on a tape, or doesn’t look like it has, then MM refuses to trim it,
not letting you possibly delete the only copy you have.

the Media Manager is a lot less scary than most people feel it is.

the most important tip regarding the Media Manager is to NEVER use “Use Existing” mode

if you’re trimming, or “consolidating” media, that will screw with your original media.
and if something goes wrong, there;s no going back.
Same goes for “MOVE” mode: that
l copy the media, and then delete the originals

Use “COPY” mode, and then delete the originals yourself, when you have checked everything is the way it should be.
Use the Make Offline window for this

oh, yes, another tip regarding speed modified shots.
they can get messed up by the MM, too.
if you have speed mod shots in your timeline,
track them down prior to any MM,
match frame them into the viewer (they will lose all their FX)
and cut them back into the timeline on an invisible track above the original.
this seems to tame the MM.

MM is supposed to have been fixed in V5 in regards Speed Mod shots,
but i haven’t tried it yet.
