Editing Audio beyond 25fps. Dialogue editing.
Hi,
I am currently doing a lot (and I really mean a lot) of dialogue editing. It is the usual scenario of wading through interviews where the interviewee seems incapable of starting or finishing a sentence in the one breath. This means I am left to try and grab useable statements out of a rambling monologue by removing the “buts” and the “and_then” etc. Most of the time I can get this happening by cutting on right frame, but everynow and then, the limitation of working in 25fps means that there is a little click or “t” or “p” sound at the start or end of a clip.
I remember when FCP was first released, one of the big claims was that FCP was able to edit audio down to 1/100th of a sec. Is it actually practically possible to do this? (or is it marketing BS?) I have had a look, and it appears that I can only keyframe audio down to 1/25th of a second (based on a 25fps timeline.)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To access Sub-Frame Audio in FCP
Click audio into Viewer, then:
1. Magnify Glass (Zoom) Tool-Click Upscale (Frame shows as Large Grey Area)
2. Arrow Tool-Click on FRAME in question.
3. Option-Click to add key-nodes at sub-frame level (1/100th frame.)
4. Arrow Tool-Click/Drag node levels. -
You can keyframe audio levels and pan to 1/100th second and you can slip an audio clip to the same accuracy but you can only create cuts at the frame level.

i do a lot of dialogue finessing, too, cutting out and’s but’s etc.
simplest thing for me is to set my default audio transition to 1 or 2 frames.
if i get a tiny click on the cut, then the tiny disolve fixes it.
i’ve yet to resort to FCPs difficult subframe “editing”
to set default:
go to effects bin, audio transitions.
type in new duration,
control or right click on trans,
“Set default”to add trans:
control or right click on cut,
add transition
or
select cut,

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the tip. I have been working with short audio transitions to get the clicks, but I prefer keyframing as a method so that the clip is clean on its own. At this stage of the edit, we are doing a lot of shuffling, so I am trying to avoid using transitions so that it is easier to move things around.
BTW, the sub-frame editing is just unreal. It has been working a treat and is really easy to get to.
