I appreciate all the help I can get but I’m really looking for feedback on conversion practices more than where to get equipment.

HDX900 are not as easy to rent 4 of them as the varicam. Unfortunately multicam concert shoots and budgets do not lend themselves to much testing, it is get in and get out. They is why we stay with what we know, for me it is production trucks with Sony HDCAM 1080. But I may need to get with the rental company and see if they will help me with some tests at no charge.

Well I see what could be my first problem, I just went to Panasonics website and the Varicam doesn’t seem to do 1080i, guess I have been reading too much about on the new and cheaper P2 cameras that do 720 and 1080.
So let me change the question. How what does 720P cross-convert to 1080i using the Kona3 compared to HDCAM shot in 1080i.

I guess I’m just a middle of the road guy, for my laptops I normally get 5400 rpm drive for the extra space but afraid the 4200 would be too slow. Not really based on anything, just want I buy.
I know I can work with simple DV job captured to my internal when I’m in a pitch or ext bus powered 5400 FW drives but I don’t know if the 4200 would work for that.

“Chance are” can bite you in the a$$. I cost less then a $200 bucks to have a back up drive handy. Not trying to hammer you, just not a wise thing to suggest if you are have a tight workflow. Of course we all do a lot of things that are probably not recommended.
If I just want to play with new software I load it onto another boot drive so I can go back and forth very quickly. I’m doing this with FCS2 on my tower (internal) and MacBook Pro (ext FW).

Easiest way to do this is to make a anamorphic version of the timeline you now have so all the video settings are the same and then just click the anamorphic button.
Than place the 4:3 sequence in the new timeline and you will have a pillar box version. Send this to Compressor and get what you want. the HD footage will be 16:9 but your original footage will keep the 4:3 look.
NOTE: Compressor 3 is greatly improve with up-converting now that it has Optical Flow built in but get ready to wait. You would still want to do the above.

you should also know that there is no difference in upgrade and full version disc. only the installer program acts differently depending on what serial number is entered. With the upgrade serial number the installer looks for perviously installed software, if it doesn’t find it it ask for the previous serial number and does a full install. Academic and NFR serial numbers (and that is the only difference) just will not give you a valid upgrade path. And this is only to limit the life of academic versions not to limit the program in any way.
While I do not have Academic versions I did Upgrade three systems to FCS (2) as new installs and (1) as an upgrade, both ways work fine.
When you install your FCS2 it will only ask for the new serial number and it would install FCS and remove FCS1 (or whatever version you have).

One problem that I seem to have a lot is the firestore goes in and out of record (without stopping the record process) Let the camera run for 20 minutes and there will be jumps in the action and what looks like a bad crash edit between the two places. Firewire connections are all taped down. Have to save that I’m not a big fan of the Firestore. Chris would love to email you off line, I don’t see how anyone can use these things for a living, any help would be appreciated.

Duel Adapter has one, they just release a beta driver for OS 10.4.9 and I tested it out and it worked. It was a little faster than 1 GB per minute transfer to a FW400. Hopefully it would be twice as fast to a FW800 drive.
My main grip is the cable is so thick and short it is tough get a good placement in cramped spaces but they doesn’t hurt usage.

yeah, once David got me looking it was easy to solve, before the red line would have started my search.
Personally this is the best feature of the upgrade to FCP I love it! Now I know one way it can get you and will watch out for it.
