I think this is more of a GV Stratus format vs Edius. Getting more info from the studio. The files are ingested into Stratus and then edited on Edius (or were). All the files are a .cmf wrapper that is a folder on the computer and that folder has all the files that I mentioned above.

    Very confusing post.

But… A QT movie can contain and play closed captions, you have to make sure that the viewing is turned on. A little different in QT 7and 10 but they both have view Closed Captions.

In premiere if you have 708 or 608 captions in your timeline and you export with captions embedded, QT player, both 7 and 10, will playback closed captions. I have even tried it on a Windows system with QT7. Note it takes about 5 seconds for captions to start being decoded so if you have captions early on they may not appear.

If you are choosing Burn-in on export and you are not seeing any captions then it sounds like there is something wrong with the captions themselves. How are you making and bringing the source caption file?

Never mind, I see that it has 12.0.0 listed in the previous versions drop down.

“the workaround here is to revert to the older version”

How does one revert to 12.0.1? there is no way to not have 12.1 overwrite the older 12 versions.

  • I work for a Cable channel and we deliver hundreds of files a day and a lot of them have CC embedded using Premiere.

That said getting them in correctly can be challenging. Each release of Premiere seems to have different issues. If your captions are coming back in correctly you should be good to go. The file viewer we have found to be the best for a quality check and confirmation of the captions is Telestream’s Switch (Plus) it is now $199 but it works well. The $10 version will not display captions. IN premiere and switch you can toggle back and forth between 608 and 708 for QC’ing.

  • I do a lot of closed caption fixing as part of me job and I don’t see a clear path from Premiere’s internal caption tool.

One issue is there is a lot of formatting with Open Captions that will not transfer to other standards. With closed captions all you can do is set the color and placement of the text. (Adobe’s Open Subtitles works the same way).

You can Export Open Caption clip from the bin into srt and xml. I did a test and the srt will not import into MacCaption, which is the program that I do a lot of conversion with. I can bring in the xml but the placement is not correct.

What needs to be remembered is that every different playback and delivery method needs a different type of file. DVD, BluRay, youtube, web players and what not need different files.

February 1, 2018 at 4:48 pm in reply to: 708 Closed Captions from MCC files FIXED!!!

Wanted to post a qualification to this.

It seems that there are some online caption companies that are delivery MCC files that are still not working. One that several of our programmers use are still showing issues with the 708. IF there are two lines of captions it only displays the second line. If the line has more than 32 characters it truncates the text.

I have been able to bring these files into MacCaption pulling from the 608 info and export new and fixed mcc files with 708 and 608 showing up correctly in Premiere 12.0.1.

If anyone is seeing this issue I would be glad to run a test for you.

  • Tim,

I totally understand that and like I said there is not an end-result problem. But in my 4+ years of using Bru I have never overwritten a tape, not once, just not my workflow. A tape gets written only once and when the entire destination set of 10 tapes are filled they are physically locked and removed. Then a new set of 10 tapes are put in.

Example: right now I’m about to take out RFD301-310 and replace them with RFD311-320. The same Backup Jobs will be used. I would just love for the software to start the next backup on 311 and and go in order. In the end it doesn’t cause a problem but in order would help me track usage better to see what is full. Once again in the end it is no big deal. When I need to store files from the removed tapes I simple find the actual tapes the files are on and put them in my “Restore” side of the library that is never used as a destination.

Adobe just did a 12.0.1 update, it fixed the issue with 708 closed captions. Don’t know if this would help with your issue.
