No Cards “What the &*%#”
Posted by Steve on June 9, 2007 at 3:22 pmWhat good is this camera? No cards, My FS100 will not charge, will not run off of AC. I am on location in Mexico, and to top it off the the HVX 200 handle broke off, The camera fell one foot landed on the handle snaped off, the screws holding the handle are NOT long enough going into the body above the XLR connections see pics. BTW the camera is still working. I have 4 P2 cards in use now.

So this relationship with Panasonic, with no cards, FS100 not working, and a broken camera handle, yes that was my fault, is not good.
Looking forward to Sony’s new camera with cards. Hopefully lots of them.
I am a little fustrated.

June 9, 2007 at 5:27 pmYour anger seems a little misplaced – since none of your situation has anything to do with Panasonic. I’m sure you’re just venting – I can imagine that dropping your camera was probably a little embarrasing. But “stuff” happens to all of us. You move on as best you can.
Panasonic doesn’t make the FS100 – and if you’ve ready any of the posts here it seems fraught with issues and many posters don’t trust it. Have you been on the phone with the seller or manufacturer to send a replacement?
You’re actually very lucky the HVX200 is still working after taking a fall that broke the handle. Shows how durable the body is. And it could’ve been much worse – you could’ve dropped it on the lens.
Finally, with (4) P2 Cards you really seem well set to have someone DL’ing the files on one or two of them while you’re shooting out the others. I do that successfully with only (2) P2 Cards.
You’re in Mexico – take a deep breath, suck down a margarita a finish the rest of your shoot. I hope it proceeds without another hitch.
Best,
-Scott

June 9, 2007 at 6:51 pmMy fustration is yes I need more cards! Yes the FS100 has nothing to do about the camera, but that is how it was being used for a video shoot and edited on site for a fortune 100 company. Yes very lucky it still works as I am heading off to France next week for another shoot with a camera without a handle.
But where are the *&% cards?

June 9, 2007 at 7:22 pmThey have those in Mexico too. Last time I checked Sony gear didn’t grow on trees either. 🙂

June 9, 2007 at 7:27 pmActually I’ve been hearing that cards are comparatively easier to get in Europe; might call ahead and see if you can get some reserved at a French dealer for when you get there?

FWIW, Once again most of the FS-100 “issues” seem to be operator error and just plain not reading the manual. If you read this same forum there are just as many “issues” with people using the P2 cards. I have done many shoots in Mexico and overseas, and my guess is that Steve didn’t use a voltage regulator/converter and fried his FS-100. Never leave the USA without it. Mexico is notorious for bad and wildly fluctuating AC power.

I’m glad to hear that the Firestore is working for you. However, the manufacturer was aware of the problems and issued a few software updates. Not exactly operator error situations. I’m not referring to a loose cable.
2.) “there are just as many “issues” with people using the P2 cards”
Not true where performance is concerned.

June 11, 2007 at 5:00 amFocus hasn’t done a software update since 3.01, quite awhile ago, which mainly offered the Quicktime versus P2 option in recording your footage. There never was a problem with the second firmware update which corrected 720P24F issues from the original firmware. The 1080i P2 recording option has never been a problem. I have responded personally to many people in the FS-100 forum (and continue to do so offline) who did indeed not read the manual and had the majority of their problems by going in and changing settings that were default settings from the manufacturer. To say that others aren’t having problems with the P2 cards is ludicrous. Just follow your arrow down the long list of posts in this forum.

June 11, 2007 at 3:05 pmOne problem that I seem to have a lot is the firestore goes in and out of record (without stopping the record process) Let the camera run for 20 minutes and there will be jumps in the action and what looks like a bad crash edit between the two places. Firewire connections are all taped down. Have to save that I’m not a big fan of the Firestore. Chris would love to email you off line, I don’t see how anyone can use these things for a living, any help would be appreciated.

June 11, 2007 at 5:33 pmMike,
I’ll contact you offline as well, but these are the proper settings for both HVX and FS-100 for fixing the problems you are having. Place the HVX in UB Mode FRM Rate, 1394 Control Ext, 1394 Cmd Sel Rec_P, TC-rec run. Place the Firestore in External Ctl Pause, TC ext, non-drop Frame. With these settings, the FS-100 is triggered everytime you hit the record button on the HVX, and goes into record pause when you hit the HVX record button again, just like it would if you were using a Mini DV camera tape. Using these settings I have never had the problem you mentioned while recording.
