updating FCP 5.1 to 5.1.4 mid-project…?
howdy-
while I have always lived by the golden rule of never going from one version to another in the middle of a project, I am tempted by current circumstances: I was brought into a feature doc project already quite a long way along: DV25, 23.98/4×3& 16×9/lots of archival, including rare but degraded PAL VHS…
The version of the project is 5.1. on the client’s machine. But I really want to be able to work on some sequences at home and my FCP set up is 5.1.4, sequences of which is of course unrecognizable to 5.1.
How much trouble am i asking for if i upgrade the client’s project to 5.1.4? And somewhere I heard that there are some advantages to tweaks in the 3 way color corrector & elsewhere in 5.1.4 over 5.1…thanks for advice

Obviously, back up their project before you do it, but the only problem is of course going back to their machine. Would you need to do that? Why hasn’t the client upgraded their machine? Seem like an easy answer if you have to take it back to their machine.
5.1.4 is certainly better than 5.1. I guess if there are other drivers/cards involved you might want to look into it deeper.

If you always clone your system drive to an external firewire drive before upgrading you’ll never ned to be concerned about upgrading or updating.

chances are, youll be fine. i always would do updates without backing up, call me irresponsible. never had problems though.

“Chance are” can bite you in the a$$. I cost less then a $200 bucks to have a back up drive handy. Not trying to hammer you, just not a wise thing to suggest if you are have a tight workflow. Of course we all do a lot of things that are probably not recommended.
If I just want to play with new software I load it onto another boot drive so I can go back and forth very quickly. I’m doing this with FCS2 on my tower (internal) and MacBook Pro (ext FW).

The upgrade from 5.1 to 5.1.4 is not as intense as a version update (such as 4.5 to 5.0 or 5.1). While I agree that you should duplicate the project and keep that one safe, the upgrade should be pretty smooth. There are some things that changed from 5.1 to 5.1.4 (namely P2 import stuff and 3rd party fx plug behaviors) but for the most part you should be okay.
Just be prepared to rebuild the project (as in recapture) if problems arise. I have also fond that going from 5.1.4 to 5.1.2 is backwards compatible (for some odd reason as FCP projects usually are not). Your client should also upgrade to 5.1.4. It’s free and is really stable and working well.

There’s not good reason for leaving your business to chance. Cloning takes about an hour of your time, requires an $89 hard drive, and you can be back up and running in two minutes if the upgrade doesn’t go as expected.

My find in bin function startet getting wonky just with this upgrade. Everything else worked nicely. So if find in bin is important for you, I would NOT do it.
