As for a user of XDCAM and XDCAM HD for more than a year now, I can tell you without a doubt that this is the best and easiest format to use.
As most of you know, I’m not a fan of P2. Mostly beacuse there is no form of backup for the media. Hard drives fail, so that’s not a permanent form of backup. Blu-Ray is just coming about but that’s what Sony is already using with XDCAM. So…. why not just use XDCAM?
Ok, enough of that… As for using XDCAM, FCP works flawlessly with it, as long as you are using the newer versions of FCP. But you really do need to have a copy of Sony’s Software Transfer program.

That’s been my experience, too.
I have noticed that if you have alot of jerkiness in the video, its useless. In my business, you have to shoot animals that can be 150 to 300 yards away and full zoom with a little breeze can get quite shaky. SmoothCam falls flat on these shots. But now, for shots that have a little shake to them, its great.

Well….
I guess you could say that you’re in a pickle of sorts. Your only solution is software conversion. The easiest method would be to drop your HDV sequence into a DV sequence and render it. It should be ok. The other method is using Compressor. i just took a seven minute sales presentation (edited DVCProHD 1080i 29.97) and compressed it to DV Anamorphic. It looked great.

HD video is upper field, whereas, SD video is lower field. The noise you are seeing is a factor of HDV. There shouldn’t be much noise at all. Can you post a screen cap somewhere so that we can see this noise you speak of? Do you have an AJA card?

Ok… I have to jump in here…
I’m in the car with all of you!
I’ve been in the business for about 20 years now. I started working for a local PBS station with absolutely no budgets and very basic well-used equipment. I learned an incredible wealth of experience. I did everything production. I was an engineer, set designer, audio engineer, camera operator, director, producer, editor, DP, production vehicle driver, and so forth…. I think you get the idea.
You can learn alot from college or a film school, BUT, you can’t replace actual experience with school knowledge.
All of these people who think they are editors have really hurt my end of the industry, making it very difficult to make the money that we should. BUT, when it comes down to it, people will notice your work, good and bad.
Just because you decided that your current job isn’t working out and you’ve always wanted to be an editor so you went out and bought all of this equipment, it doesn’t mean that you are an editor. If you like medicine, that doesn’t make you a doctor.

No offense taken, Ben…
I agree with you completely but my concerns are with the people who seem more interested in bashing Apple and FCP for some bugs that obviously need to be worked out.
As for the commercial end of this issue… I don’t believe these issues should keep anyone from upgrading since the number of bugs far out-weight the additional features that have been added to FCS2.
If you talk with the Avid folks, they have their share of bugs that are killing them, too. The reason for the COW is to discuss and share ways of avoiding this problems.

I just got back from vacation this morning, so, its back to work…
It was my pleasure to review your DVD. I knew that it was going to be a good thorough job. I have lots of tutorial DVDs around here and most are so very boring but yours was informative and entertaining. I hope everyone here purchases one. They should!
As for the 80’s thing… I think is added to the DVD’s entertaining feature.

I think Tim Wilson should make this DVD a requirement for those looking into creating tutorial DVD for the COW!

As you can see, Dane… There are many ways of doing this. The easiest method if to edit completely in DVCProHD, master in DVCProHD and use the machine to down-convert to SD 4:3 for you to your BetaSP machine.
I do this every week using XDCAM HD to BetaSP.

That is because Hollywood has used Avid for so long now that the industry standard for large budget films are using giant edit systems like Avid. Final Cut Pro has only recently become a contender in this industry. If you do more research, you’ll find that more movies are using Final Cut Pro in some part of the process than it has in the past.
