or “why i just love HDV”
i have a few questions regarding a HDV project- the footage was shot HDV 59.94 then captured following AJA’s HDV white paper, the final edit looking great-
the question is what is the best way to down-rez to standard def anamorphic and master on a DV tape?
one suggestion is to use compressor to do the down-rez but the end results were not acceptable with quite a lot of stair-stepping and noise
the second suggestion was to re-capture the sequence at the SD resolution- is there a way to duplicate a sequence and capture just the video elements from tape? or is there a better way?
    thanks very much all suggestions-

[rick kz] “one suggestion is to use compressor to do the down-rez but the end results were not acceptable with quite a lot of stair-stepping and noise” This is because you compressed your video to the wrong field settings. HD video is upper field, whereas, SD video is lower field. The noise you are seeing is a factor of HDV. There shouldn’t be much noise at all. Can you post a screen cap somewhere so that we can see this noise you speak of? Do you have an AJA card?

    thanks for the info!
there is a AJA kona LHe installed- and i do not have a frame available at this time- the frustrating part is that the deck that the final is to be recorded on is DV/HDV input, no SDI (one of the economical sony HDV decks) could i just set the field order in compressor? i believe the editor may have used one of the pre-built settings in compressor such as “reformat/DV NTSC anamorphic”, could this be modified to uncompressed field 2 dominant?

What’s your HD sequence setting? Is it uncompressed or DVCProHD?
What about this supposed new feature of FCP 6 to output to a device that has settings different from your sequence? Apple’s example is an uncompressed sequence output to a DV device via FireWire. If you have FCP6 and a fast system, maybe this is possible?

    Well….

I guess you could say that you’re in a pickle of sorts. Your only solution is software conversion. The easiest method would be to drop your HDV sequence into a DV sequence and render it. It should be ok. The other method is using Compressor. i just took a seven minute sales presentation (edited DVCProHD 1080i 29.97) and compressed it to DV Anamorphic. It looked great.
