Hi Rory,
Further to Kristian’s comments, QT movies can be mounted with FrameLink for Mac. On PC, FrameLink will mount AVI movies. Regardless of whether the movies are QT or AVI, they also need to be uncompressed.

Please try temporarily uninstalling the DeckLink drivers and removing the card. Now restart the PC and see if Windows can see all 4 GB of RAM. Also try some renders in Premiere Pro and see if there is any difference in performance. When you have completed your testing, reinsert the DeckLink card and then reinstall the latest DeckLink drivers.

Capture offset needs to be calibrated for every deck. Even if you have two decks which are the same model, they might have different capture offsets and this is due to small mechanical differences between decks. If you ever update the firmware in your deck, you should recalibrate the offset.
To do so, peform a batch capture of video with burnt in timecode. Then compare the burnt in time code of the first and last frames of each captured clip with the In and Out points you had specified for the clip. If you find that all captured clips are out by the same amount, eg 2 frames, then change the capture preset accordingly. If they are all exactly as they should be, then you do not need to change the capture preset. If you find that most are OK but a few are off, try increasing the pre-roll setting by a second or 2 so that the tape mechanism will have stabilized by the time each capture starts.

Hi George,
I’m guessing this is the same OpenGL issue which was introduced with the Mac OS X 10.4.3 update and which now causes Motion 2.0.1 to crash when some effects are used and a DeckLink card and drivers are installed. We have a support note named Motion crashes after Mac OS X 10.4.3 update which describes the problem and the work around, ie disable the DeckLink desktop.
Would you please try this and let us know if it helps? Meanwhile we’ll try to get a copy of Apeture quickly to test this for ourselves. Thanks very much for your report as it would be good to get on top of this quickly.

Hi Claus,
Do you have access to any other SD-SDI or HD-SDI source so you can test the SDI input of your monitor? It would be great if you could test it with the SDI output of a deck.
When you start up your PC and extend the desktop on to the DeckLink monitor, can you see a NTSC or PAL desktop on your monitor or only static?

Hi Mark,
I’m a big fan of DiskWarrior but it is not used for defragmentation of files. Kristian’s suggestion of copying files off on to another disk, then erasing the RAID and then copying the files back on would be the fastest and safest way of defragmenting the disk. There are a few file optimization utilities available but they take a very long time to move large video files around and I’m not aware of any of them being fail safe. DiskWarrior will sometimes provide a speed boost as it optimizes the directory structure, which is worth doing, but that is different to optimizing the location of the files on the hard disk.
As a single SATA disk reaches about 80% capacity, it may slow down to around 50% of its speed when empty. This is normal and the more disks you RAID together, the less this slow down will be. A lot of DeckLink users are using 2-disk SATA arrays and these are usually fine but can still underperform when they become too fragmented. It is useful to have a spare disk or two available so you can copy files of the disk array and erase it periodically if it is becoming too slow.

Hi Sean,
Please uninstall the DeckLink drivers and see if it makes any difference. There should be no reason why the DeckLink drivers would cause a problem with your Firewire captures however it would be worth retesting after running the Uninstaller.

Hi Norman,
That would be a nice function but I think Adobe would need to implement that. However I will ask that such a function be added to Blackmagic Deck Control because then you could blank the tape regardless of which NLE you then used.
