October 20, 2010 at 6:20 am in reply to: MC 5 w/Unity and Interplay vs FCP 7 w/Final Cut ServerYour managers are making a HUGE mistake.
Yes, you can run FCP with Unity now… AVID have provision for that, but I don’t think FCP has the facility to lock bins like Avid does to protect the contents in a multi-user environment.
As for Interplay and FCP… no dice. Personally, I hate Interplay. It cripples more functionality than it enables. No more re-link, and forget using it in combination with local storage. It won’t/can’t do it. I lost 3 entire episodes of a tight turn around reality series before Avid told us there were bugs. Interplay kept quarantining all my mixdowns and renders.
Interplay is the annoying middleman you actually don’t need. Just set up a few MC Soft stations for producers and you’re much better off.
But that’s just my opinion. The best day for me was when I was able to get it off my system entirely. Again, another example of a decision made by “managers” with no effing idea what you have to do day to day.

So, let me get this straight…
I can access Avid MXF files right off the Unity and grade in Davinci now?
That would be too cool. How does the import of sequences go and then the export of graded materials back to Avid?

In my opinion, you do not want to be using RAID 0 set ups for your media storage. If one drive fails, you’re screwed. RAID 5 all the way.
FWIW, I have a Maxx Digital Evo 2 array and am extremely happy with it. Not just the quality of the product but the quality of the customer service and support are second to none.
Like you, we shoot XD HD and cut on Avid. Invest wisely now and reap the benefits of quality decisions years down the line.

Try this…
Load your media tool, search only in the project you digitsed the clsps to and only select ‘master clips’.
It should show the clips in the media tool once it has finished searching. Just drag them to an open bin in your project and you should be ok.

Dang. I use that all the time for calculating show durations. Haven’t gone to 5 yet but it’s been ordered.
Anyone?

August 2, 2010 at 1:21 am in reply to: Media Composer 5: Exception error while digitizing HDVIf the error is happening when the camera buttons on or off then there is a discontinuity in time code occuring, which will cause Avid to stop, based on your capture settings.
You can go to your capture settings in MC and select “capture across timecode breaks”. See if that works. Also, try toggling the “Enable detection of small timecode breaks” button under DV&HDV Options in your capture settings. Might help?
There should be no problem with the 30p format.

I’m not going to say ‘don’t use Sorenson for xyz’ but if it were me and I needed to preserve a sequence for re-editing at a later date I would either export it as an AAF with handles so I could bring it in as an editable sequence or I would export it as a mixed-down master using export “same as source” setting. If your footage has been acquired on XDCam and ‘same as source’ is not possible then Animation codec at best possible resolution settings would be my choice… but that’s just my take on it.

What a lazy-ass editor. ‘Drama’ editor or not… he should do his job. It would take all of 5 minutes to mark in points and group.

Do you still have the hard drive attached holding the RED files?
For AMA to work you must have the original data/media/folder location connected at all times. Re-link only applies to media that has been added to the Avid media file databases, ie via import or capture.
FWIW, editing natively (I assume 4K?) is kinda a moot point given Avid tops out at 1080. I think you’ll find transcoding will ultimately make your job quicker.

Check that your FW card drivers are compatible with your new OS. Highly likely it isn’t and that is causing the problems.
