You’re welcome. The benefits of a global community… 24/7 help.

Remember if you want to use AMA just do the reverse.

  • Got it. Sorry, for some reason I thought it a Red/Avid question… not sure why I read it that way.

It may have defaulted back to AMA settings. Check that AMA is off, re-launch MC and it should be there.

  • Here’s something I spotted over on the RED forums a while back.

You can indeed go to Color from Avid by following these steps.

If you’re already quite a way in to the project, which it sounds like you are, I think the wisest course of action would be to stick with Final Cut until you’re done. As the other guys have said, it’s possible but it’s going to be a major PITA.

Perhaps if the editor was responsible for all the changeover grief he/she might think twice?

    Hi Jon,

I have just finished an 8 part reality series with over 400 XD discs shot on PDW700’s

Here’s how I did it, and I disagree with Gary’s comments re: naming discs. You MUST name/ID them or else your going to create a whole world of pain for yourself.

As soon as the discs arrives we popped them into the XD deck (connected to Ingest via firewire) and opened it up using the Sony XD browser software. Immediately we named the disc. It’s very easy. We then pull the disc out and slide the erase protect latch over so no one can accidentally overwrite any info on the disc.

The we imported it into Avid using ‘import XDCam proxy’. Lo-res pics for offline edit. No problem.

Unfortunately we didn’t have MC5 available so we had a bit of extra back and forth when conforming the pics AND audio. But you should be safe there. When it came to conforming I simply selected the sequence and did a batch import. Avid would ask for discs the same way it would ask for tapes. You can select ‘disk label’ in your bin view to see the name of the disc.

Something to be aware of though, when you’re conforming, is that if your editors have used group clips anywhere, before you conform make sure you right click the sequence and select “Commit MultiCam Edits”. Otherwise Avid will batch import all the clips in the group, even though only one shot is present in the sequence, which in turn will increase your conform time. It’s annoying but thankfully I spotted it after only 2 episodes. There is also a bug if you create a motion effect from a group clip. It won’t conform correctly (shows up as a freeze frame of the first frame of the clip instead) so make sure you match frame back to the original clip, not the group clip, when making motion effects.

Kind of a long winded response but hope it makes sense and hope it helps!

Personally, I would not use the AMA approach.

After nearly 400 XD discs ingested for a reality TV series, and after trying both ways, I would use the “Import XD Proxy” and batch re-capture method. But that’s just my opinion. I find it to be quicker and more responsive when editing (especially when grouping clips or cutting with multiple streams).

    Of course, YMMV.

Load your sequence in the timeline, select all tracks (audio and video).

    File -> Export.

Select AAF. Include all video and audio tracks. Embed Media in AAF.

    Ok.

Yep, despite Avid saying it’s ok to run local and Unity storage with Interplay the fact is you cannot.

Everything is running perfectly now. Online is separated from the offline suites network wise. Everthing good…. now maybe I can finish these shows!

  • I have the same problem… Sony HVR-1500 with a 2 frame drift.

PITA but once aware of it I would just go through the sequence and slip every HDV shot by 2 frames. Annoying and no idea why it’s doing it.
