    Hey all,
My boss has has asked me to look into some new external hard drives for our editing suite. For the price, these drives from OWC seemed like a good deal from an economic standpoint. Compared to similar size of drives from G-Technology or CalDigit, these seem like the best value. We edit on Media Composer, typically using XDCAM HD footage. Is there any reason the OWC drives wouldn’t work? Am I going to be kicking my self in a few years for not getting one of the higher end name brands?

In my opinion, you do not want to be using RAID 0 set ups for your media storage. If one drive fails, you’re screwed. RAID 5 all the way.

FWIW, I have a Maxx Digital Evo 2 array and am extremely happy with it. Not just the quality of the product but the quality of the customer service and support are second to none.

Like you, we shoot XD HD and cut on Avid. Invest wisely now and reap the benefits of quality decisions years down the line.

    Charles,

I have no experience with the OWC drives, but take a closer look at the details – that price doesn’t include drives. When they say 8TB of storage that means using 2TB drives in each bay. That scares me because the larger the drive (platter capacity) the more unstable they tend to be.

Price is not always the best factor – especially when you have to tell the boss we lost all the media and it will take two days to get back to where we were.

I’ve heard good things from a lot of people who use CalDigit and G-Tech. My small G-Tech’s are great and have done me well.
