When you go into trim mode, you’ll see your two monitors change to show outgoing (left) and incoming (right) video. If you want to extend the outgoing clip ONLY, click on the left monitor. YOu’ll notice your cursor changes from a dual ‘roller’ to a single roller with the extension on the left. You’ll see it when you do it. Drag, or use the M (10 frames left), comma (1 frame left) period (1 frame right) and question mark (10 frames right) to trim as necessary. Clicking on the right monitor will allow you to trim or extend the incoming video. Trimming can be intimidating, but one of the most essential skills in any edit application. Just remember, you’ll affect audio synch if you trim only video (assuming you want to maintain synch with your video…)

I would bet it’s your OS. For example, Avid runs fine (and is certified) for Vista, but Sorenson does not.

I don’t know of any free tutorials. You may try lynda.com and see how far you can get without paying. The full version of MC comes with some pretty good tutorials, plus footage.
This and the Avid forum are good resources for answering questions. The forums over at Avid.com are good to. Don’t be shy about asking questions. I’ve been driving an Avid since 1994. I still learn new tips and tricks!
My favorite book is by Steve Bayes, called Avid editing basics. It’s available on Amazon.com.

Avid’s basic title tool is, well, basic. The only way to do glows and such without Boris is to use After Effects.
What are your system specs? If you can run Avid, you should be able to run Marquee…

When working with a new title:
Cntrl-s will save the title parameters to a .mqp file.
Cntrl-b will save the title to a bin.When working with an existing title, or a promoted title, closing marquee will save the title.

It’s probably on the C: drive. You can change that in settings under media creation. Once you get there (I’m not in front of a machine, so I can’t remember exactly the terminology), look for the render and change it to your external. Make sure you do it on both machines.
You also have the option of choosing where your render goes when you render the effect.
Finally, you can drag the media from the media files folder on the C: drive, and put it in your external.

First off, welcome! Feel free to ask as many questions as you need!
Make sure the correct tracks are activated in the timeline. Active tracks are a color (mine are green, but it depends on how you’ve customized your settings). To deactivate a track, click on the V1, A1, A2, etc., and the track will ‘turn off’. To edit B roll over an interview, click on A1 and / or A2, and overwrite the interview with your B roll.
