Calvin –
Sorry it’s taken so long to get back on this – it’s been a busy week!
First, getting the video back to a deck. I don’t play with HD, so I’m a little out of my element. However, I don’t think you can output HD via firewire without a Mojo DX in XPress. Come to think of it, I’m not sure you can hook up a DX in XPress.
If I’m wrong, someone please correct me! =0
As far as export, does your file (use quicktime out of the Avid) sound good when you play it in QT player? If so, there is a problem with your Sorenson settings.

MC 3.0 needs QT 7.4.5. Why did you roll back so far?

[Calvin Johnson] “Have a Sony video camera, Avid Xpress Pro video program and Sony recording deck.”
What’s the model of your camera / deck? What format is your source material? How is your deck hooked up (firewire / composite / component)? What resolution did you capture your footage at? Do you have a Mojo or no?
[Calvin Johnson] “Also when transferring to Sorensen Squeeze something is not quite right as any sequences that do get squeezed are all pixeled and sound is funky/hollow – something wrong with something?”
How are you exporting your sequence (Quicktime, QT reference)? To what format are you squeezing? Does the file that comes out of Avid sound OK?

I use cntrl (cmnd) + V and C (paste and copy) quite a bit as well. In the segment mode, or using in/out, hit cmnd + C to copy and paste wherever you want it (keeping in mind it will move everything down in your timeline). Submasters are also a good way to copy, say a lower third, put it in the bin and reuse it later. Just activate the tracks you need, put an in and out and hit the submaster button (I’ve got it mapped to my keyboard). It’ll put the submaster clip in the last active bin.

I’m not sure if this footage is truly in the public domain, but check here:

It’s usually not pretty, but maybe you can make it work…

Try running firewire straight into the Mojo. That is the preferred method.

If you’ve got the money, go with Sorenson – especially if AE is on a seperate machine. If you have CS3 on the same machine as Avid, you can export a QT reference and use CS3. Then use the money you would have spent on Sorenson, and get an upgrade to MC. Then you get Sorenson and a few other software toys to play with. Although, come to think of it, you should have gotten Sorenson with XPress, unless its and academic package. The academic version of Avid only comes with the editing software…

Add the transition you want.
Create a second video track, and add edits *exactly* where the transition begins and ends on the first track.
Drag a letterbox effect (or mask, depending the the shape of your letterbox – I believe you can adjust the mask more precisely) onto your second video track, directly over your transition.
That should do it…

What version of AE do you have? It’s got a pretty good encoding engine…
