On the acquisition side, a scope is a must. It lets you know your key is lit properly, as well as your subject. It takes all the guess work out of shooting.

Doesn’t OSX have some sort of automatic software installed? Of course, you wouldn’t want to do this whilst editing. Would you?

As long as you have the right connections going to the deck, of course it is. Avid was built to lay things to tape. You can either crash record, or insert edit. The only thing you would probably need is GENLOC going to both the Nitris and the deck. Oh, and an RS422/RS432 converter (Addendum makes them – google ‘rosetta stone and machine control) for deck control.

One more thing – if you use Sorenson, it won’t work with Vista. We recently had 7 Vista Media Composers re-imaged to XP because of that as well as some other quirky things. XP works well with Avid, Sorenson, AE, PShop… Vista is going away to be replace by Windows 7…

I’m not in front of an Avid right now, so the context may be a bit off…
Go to ‘file>import>P2’ and select import file (I think…). You’ll be importing the metadate, but use the media in it’s current location. If you select media, it will import the media and the metadata into your media drives. Takes a little bit of time, but you’ll have two versions.

Well, Avid doesn’t support .wma or .mpg on import. The quickest way is to use Sorenson (or whatever compression program you use) and convert the file to a .mov.
Quicktime movies are usually not a problem, unless your file has a CODEC not loaded into your machine. Can you play the quicktime on the same computer as your XPress?

You would definitely need to get a Mojo as well to use SDI.
