Agnostic here – but strictly PC at work. Mostly because PC’s are marginally cheaper, and more customizable. As far as stability, as well be PC is as stable as an off the shelf Mac, IMO.

OK, I figured it out. Thanks Michael – and to the poster over at the Avid forum – both bits of information really helped! I’ve written instruction for this, based on our local workflow. Please use it as you wish!
IMPORTING P2 MEDIA FROM A NETWORK DRIVE IN WINDOWS XP
-Map the root folder as a network drive
–Go to My Computer>Tools>Map Network Drive…
–Select a drive letter (Windows will not let you select a letter that conflicts with an internal or network drive)
–Select ‘Browse’ and navigate to the file location
–Select the folder containing the P2 file structure
–Deselect ‘Reconnect at Log on’ – the idea is to import the clips you need into your local media drives, not bog down the network by editing on it!
-Hit ‘Finish’
-Start Media Composer and select or create your project
-Go to Tools>Console
-Type in ‘alldrives’ (lower case, no spaces)
–Hit ‘enter’ – you will see a message “All drives will be seen as media drives”
–If you see the message “Only true Media drives will be seen as Media drives”, type ‘alldrives’ again.
-Close the console
-Import P2 clips as normal. The clips will not play normally – that because of the speed of the network.
-Import the clips into your local media drivesNOTE: After you have imported your clips, it is VERY IMPORTANT you tell the Avid not to use network drives – go to the console and type ‘alldrives’ again.

Another way is to use StreamClip. Google it and follow the readme. You either need QT Pro, or Quicktime alternate. It’s all in the readme.

Well you were more right than you thought. The ‘alldrives’ worked, but I got a different error:
“The selected volume is a media drive but not a P2 media drive!”
I like the exclamation point. It add finality to my ignorance.
I tried dragging the ‘contents’ file structure into another folder on the network drive called “virtual” (that came from somewhere in the dark scary place) – no go.
surely there must be a way to do this, no?

Sometimes your renders go to your C: drive. Check there, as well.

There is a TC effect in the effects menu – I think. As I recall, it takes forever to render.
There was also a real time TC FX floating around the web a couple of years back.

Do you have to use targa? .png files have an alpha with them, and are much easier to work with.
Do you have access to PhotoShop? I know Avid will import .psd files, but I’m not sure if you can specify which layer you bring in. You’ll need PShop to create either the targa, or better yet a .png, or tiff… whatever will work for you and supports an alpha.

Your OS should be 10.5.5, and QT should be 7.5.5. The readme for 3.1.1 is HERE:
You should either upgrade to MC 3.5 or roll back your OS.
