  • Poll: Mac or PC

Just curious, how many of you industry people are using Macs, PCs, etc? Or if there is already a poll like this around, I’d gladly take a look at that instead.

So, which system are you using?
    Mac OS X
    Turnkey – Windows XP
    Custom – Windows XP

What about turnkey Mac? At home I have my own Avid system on a Mac, but at the 4 places I work regularly that have Avids, the are all turnkey Mac Avids…all recently upgraded to 3.0.5 and MacPros.

Agnostic here – but strictly PC at work. Mostly because PC’s are marginally cheaper, and more customizable. As far as stability, as well be PC is as stable as an off the shelf Mac, IMO.

I’m a freelancer, so I’ll work with what I’m given, I’ll work on film with Selotape, or even VHS with BITC if that’s all there is.

But at the moment it’s MC on PC

I use both all the time. My notebook is a Mac and my desktop system is a PC.

I think what you need to be asking is what editing system you want to be using. If you want Final Cut Pro, obviously you can only use a Mac. For Premiere and Avid, it’s your choice. At my job, I have a high-end HP workstation running Avid Media Composer on Windows XP and directly behind me is my old (6 year old to be honest) Media 100 editing system that runs on a Mac. (It’s only staying in operation because I have hundreds of old commercial spots on it that sometimes require small changes) Personally, I prefer Macs. I’m used to using Macs because I have a MacBook Pro at home. Yes, PC’s are cheaper and easier to upgrade and you can get an extremely powerful system for much less than the Mac counterpart. But like I said, first, determine what editing system you want to use and what you want to use it for. Knowing those answers will help you make the decision on what platform to run with.

In terms of stability, both machines are reliable. However, I can’t speak for Vista because we use XP. I have used Vista before and hated every minute of it.

To answer your question about me, I use XP and Mac OSX. And in my opinion, I’m starting to find more and more places that have mixed platforms. Especially now that Avid has certified Final Cut Pro to run on the Avid Unity and ISIS storage systems, you’ll be seeing more mixed operating systems and editing platforms in one place.

our Avids are all on PCs (windows xp)
My system at home is MC on Vista, Vista is great once you turn all the BS off.
We also have 4 FCP rooms and all the After effects rooms are on macs

PC here with Windows XP. My last job was all PC too – 1 Media Composer PC on XP, Xpress Pro on XP, and XPress Meridien on Windows 2000 (I think).

I install on both Mac and PC. I like the Mac for 2 reasons. It is a great computer at an amazing price. Buying the PC version of what a Mac is costs more. And finally the 64bit problem.

Vista 64 bit is a bit of a bumpy ride. Windows XP 64 is even more annoying. 10.5 is 64 bit with little or no issues. The reason this is so important is because of memory access. You can use over 4GB. More than 4GB in Windows XP or 32 bit Vista, and it cannot be accessed.
