I definitely think the 5400 drive speed is not up to par. but the HDV file structure is keeping the way PPro captures is by holding the long GOP format of the original HDV signal, so having lots of little HDV clips is not ideal.
Try and test it with a longer capture and chop it up or sub-clip it in PPro, this way the indexing and conforming are done once with one long clip which will take a while, but having heaps of multiple short bursts of HDV will drag down the indexing upon loading up.

Have you tried to use the Media Browser to find and import the Files. It should stitch together the clips for you into 1 long video clip. It should only show you the 1 or two clips defined by the fact you used 2 cards, but if the file naming string follows on as it should then you will see only 1 long clip available with the Media Browser from the BPAV Folder structure the Browser interprets the other folders etc into a clip thumbnail.

What kind of format r u going out to?
What is the file size when it stops?
What format type is ur hard drive? Fat32 ntfs macext fatx

Set it in preferences. It runs on frames so pal = 25 (1sec) NTSC = 30 (1sec).
If you already have clips imported select them and right click on one goto speed/duration set to 1 sec.

I had a weird thing with hdv mpeg m2t files from onlocation. The same system I captured on wouldn’t allow the files into ppro. The codec got messed up.
The solution ended up, uninstalling ppro ame ae flash encore and reinstalling them then letting the update run itself for all the apps to get to most upto date versions.
Worked fine after that.

Are u sure the camera is not set to downconvert. The light next to the FireWire port on the cam needs to be lit on hdv. Sounds like it’s set to dv.
Get into the cam settings and change the settings to not down convert. (off)

Sounds like a video card driver issue. Try newest driver or roll back to one u new u had before ur rebuild.

Somehow your render folder has changed letter (external drives can change letters when other drives are added or removed) or the cache has been cleaned.
Just remember that the renders only help to watch back in smooth RT or to go to tape. DVD or other digital file exports will rerender the whole timeline despite the renders.

1440 stretched to 1920 will look softer. If u are going down to DVD res I’d do it outside of encore. But I would bother making the 1440 to 1920 either. BluRay Can run with 1440 and the player will scale it to 1920. Pushing and pulling the pixels wastes time and generation loss.
Try a comparison of the mpeg2 DVD res direct from the timeline of the HD edit then a nest in a SD timeline.
