EX-1 video clips longer then 1 hour do not load in Premiere CS4
Since switching from CS3 to CS4 I have not been able to load in any HD 720p30p video clips longer then (1) hour that were captured on my EX-1. I import the BPAV folder and all of the clips appear in the project bin. Because the clip is long it breaks up the MP4 file in to several linked file names, mine look like this:

GSFT7543_06.mp4When I drag the BPAV folder on to the Sequence 01 timeline all of the clips appear, they are redundant and it takes up 6 hours on the timeline. I then delete 02-06 so that I am working on file 01.
THE PROBLEM: CS4 does not produce a thumbnail at the beginning of the clip like it normally does. It also does not allow a preview. In the project bin, the thumbnails are grey. Eventually I get a (Not Responding) and CS4 crashes.
These clips import fine in CS3 but having CS4 and CS3 on the same computer means the media encoder is disabled in CS3 so I have to export as uncompressed 720p AVI files to then re-export through the CS4 Media Encoder to the several formats that I need to provide as the end deliverable.
Is there a solution to importing (1) hour clips from EX-1 footage in CS4?

Hi Jim,
Are you using the Sony media utility to transfer the clips into the computer? Try directly copying file folder from SxS card to hard drive without utility, this was recommended to us by Adobe for our CS4 customer (using Matrox MX02 Mini) and this resolved the issue.

Because I was shooting an all day conference I was using the Sony clip browser to transfer footage from 2 16GB drives (57 min capacity)to 2 external hard drives for redundancy. Then I would delete the footage from the card and slide it back in to the EX-1. I’m not sure if the hour or more clips (spread over 2 cards) can be connected by just copying files in to a folder but I will try!

Have you tried to use the Media Browser to find and import the Files. It should stitch together the clips for you into 1 long video clip. It should only show you the 1 or two clips defined by the fact you used 2 cards, but if the file naming string follows on as it should then you will see only 1 long clip available with the Media Browser from the BPAV Folder structure the Browser interprets the other folders etc into a clip thumbnail.

I just did a long shoot with my EX-3 and noticed the same thing when finished. However, I was able to bring the footage (1 hour 7 minutes worth) into CS4 with no problem. I didn’t use the Sony Clip Browser software though – just imported the whole BPAV folder into PPro and that did the trick.
I’ve never used the Clip Browser software…I don’t think you really need it with CS4 and the media browser in that.

Hi all,
I have a clip 1’28” long and I am having exactly the same problem as Jim. In Sony Clip Browser I can see and play the clip no problem. In Windows Explorer, the clip is divided into 8 parts/folders within the BPAV folder. In Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1 I have tried importing the first clip and tried via the Media Browser but I get the same result – sometimes the clip will play just the audio for a short while before Premiere hangs, other times Premiere just hangs.
My PC is an Asus Deluxe P6T, Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, 3 x 1TB Barracuda drives, ATI 4850 graphics 1GB, Windows 7 Ultimate.
Any ideas most welcome!

Try just importing the whole BPAV folder from the SxS card into PPro – that should then allow you to the whole clip.

If you have used the sony clip browser to transfer the footage on to your hard drive and then you deleted the footage from the sxs card then you can not use the clips in CS4, you have to use CS3 or possibly CS5 (I have not tried in CS5) but I know it works in CS3. For future shoots that run longer than an hour DO NOT use clip browser to transfer, just use windows explorer and MERGE the BPAV folders when it comes time to transfer the second card.

Thanks Eric and Jim. I had deleted the footage from the SxS card after transferring it via Clip Browser. Now I have to dig out that old version of CS3 I guess…
Jim, any caveats on installing CS3 with CS4 already in? How did you get the footage out of CS3 and into CS4?

Thanks for your top tip, Jim, it works perfectly importing into CS3.
I was doing a road trip from Harare to Johannesburg and near the end of the trip, I set up my EX1 on a tripod and wedged it on the passenger seat, recording the last 1.5 hours of the trip. I’ve now bumped up the clip speed by 4000% so the clip is about 2 minutes long. It looks great! As you can see, really crucial footage 😉

Hmm just one glitch – installing CS3 seems to have broken my CS4 installation and I can’t reinstall without the infamous error 1603. Looks like it’s hard drive format time…
