Don’t forget, you can rent Adobe Creative Cloud month to month. You get After Effects and Premiere Pro (and everything else). Not a huge investment to get the right tools for the job.

Nearly everything I finish for broadcast on various networks is at DNX 145. Its considered a finishing codec. Good balance between storage space and quality. Perfectly fine for a lot of material.
Thats not to say there is no reason ever to finish at anything higher…though normally, if you were going to do that, you would maximize your offline storage by using DNX 36 (which looks surprisingly good).
Depending on the footage, you may benefit from having your color correction done at 10 bit DNX 220X. Look for banding and other artifacts carefully, if this is important to you. You might not care now, but in a few years….maybe after looking at a lot of 4k or other high resolution footage in the interim, you might regret not finishing in 10 bit.

According to a post elsewhere by Marianna from Avid. Yosemite may be certified imminently. They are focused on getting it done.
If you can wait a bit longer, might be the best course of action.
For what it’s worth, I am running Avid 8.2 with Yosemite in my home system (non critical) 2008 MacPro. No issues.
I cloned my boot drive with Mavericks before upgrading, so I could switch back, if all hell broke loose. But I had no problems at all. YMMV. -
Simple answer. It won’t work. Import the stills, don’t use Avid Pan and Zoom. Don’t worry about the quality.
Replace the stills with the full res file in After Effects. -
If you have been using it for awhile and then it suddenly goes offline, it’s likely the drive is spinning down.
Go to your Energy Saver Control panel in System Preferences and set the drives to never sleep.Note, some external drives will ignore this setting and do it anyway.

What are you using for a media drive? Best to have a dedicated media drive (RAID if possible). This can be internal or external via eSATA or USB 3 (not USB2). Since you are on Windows, you probably don’t have Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt, which are other options for external storage.
Your processor, RAM and graphics card are more than capable.

Michael beat me to it. I might add that It’s odd that Transcoding the audio is not pre-checked as the default setting by Avid.
