I have moved an entire FCP project onto a portable drive. When I open this project on another computer at first it comes up fine. After a bit of use in the session the render files all drop off and turn red.

I have not used manage project, I have just copied the entire project.

All of the render files and media files are within the session.

Can anyone explain to me what is happening here.

Ultimately I would like to collaborate with an editor in another country. We both have the original media. I was hoping to email EDL’s and re render any new info. However we are having to reconnect every file.

    Thank you

EDLs will always needed relinking plus a lot of other information like titles, plugins etc will not translate. If you are bot on the same version of FCP then email the project file.

Even then you will need to relink as FCP references the files by drive name, folders etc so each system will have a difference between where the media will be. So relinking is normal.

If you have been using it for awhile and then it suddenly goes offline, it’s likely the drive is spinning down.
Go to your Energy Saver Control panel in System Preferences and set the drives to never sleep.

Note, some external drives will ignore this setting and do it anyway.
