FCP has OMF export too. Unlike Avid it does not maintain audio keyframes (unless you use Automatic Duck).

Avid Adrenaline can edit with DV50 natively…just export as DV50 and you wont lose any quality and this will result in the most manageable file size.

If you use 2 video tracks, you can use opacity keyframes (and bezier curves) instead of a dissolve.

You can also purchase plugins that have various types of dissolves. Graeme Nattress has some good plugins…his set 1 includes G Dissolve which has some film like dissolve options.

[John Steventon] “So does that mean I’m stuck with 5.04 (that I bought in August 05) unless I buy 5.1?

Hmmm, the similarity between Apple and Avid is beginning to get closer…”

While having to pay for a point upgrade of FCP might rub you the wrong way, $39 is significantly cheaper than most of the Avid upgrades.
In fact, for those who only owned FCP 5 standalone, you can now upgrade to the ENTIRE FCP STUDIO SUITE for just $99…which is pretty amazingly generous.

June 5, 2006 at 3:00 pm in reply to: project takes to long to open 🙁

Another thing to keep in mind…unlike Avid, you can open more than one project at a time….therefore you can move bins, clips and sequences that are not needed frequently into other projects to reduce the size of your working project. Just open the other project(s) when you need them.

  • good to know. I knew it was a problem on older systems, but was not sure if they fixed that. It used to be that you could not mix bit rates on an Avid, but they have overcome that issue.

June 5, 2006 at 5:00 am in reply to: Mini-DV Onlining

If you are going to edit in the DV codec there is no benefit in options 2 or 3. Just output to mini DV and have it dubbed via SDI to Digibeta at a dub house.
There is no quality difference in using DVCAM.

However, if you edit in the DV codec, but copy your final edit into an uncompressed sequence (you will have to render everything), you will see some benefit in composited graphics provided you master to Digibeta via SDI. So option 2 would work in this instance. However, you would need drives capable of playing uncompressed video.

If you can online on an Avid or FCP system uncompressed, you might see some improvement in graphics compositing, but only if you do not edit in the DV Codec.

  • If you are mixing your audio in Pro Tools you might want to do some tests. There are some older versions that will not deal with an OMF file that has mixed bit rates.

You might want to read up on how Autosync works, rather than use the workflow you are suggesting. Its all in the Media Composer Help.

[David Jones] “Because I have a new MacBook Pro, and you should know that you are not limited to just a single firewire port as you say.”

He’s talking about the Mac Book (the new revamped iBook) , not the Mac Book Pro.
