Seems like your systems should be fast enough for this type of work. You should check with Blackmagic about PCI slot order. With my Aurora Igniter system years ago, if I put the SCSI card ahead of the Igniter card it would rob PCI bandwith causing dropped frames. Don’t know if the Decklink card, I assume you are using, has any such restrictions.

Its also a good idea to put your Autosave Vault on a different drive than your boot drive (if thats where you are storing your project)…this way if your boot drive fails, you dont lose your autosave vault. I also backup my current project to .Mac every night.

Make sure you DO NOT render it.
Rendering makes a composite from the top layer down. -
I did this going the other way 720p to 1080i recently using Compressor and it looked good.

The compression markers are made in either option, I tested it (you can view them in the Compressor preview window. The only difference is that all effects in the Send to Compressor option are rendered directly to MPEG2 without rendering to your sequence codec first, as it would in a reference movie. This is why it takes so long, but it should mean at least marginally cleaner encodes.

some types of filters effects are dependent on the length of the clip. if the clip gets shorter (by a cut) then the effect needs to be recalculated.

I’ve seen them as low as $3500-$4000, but you have to be diligent. Its not nuts to get one, as BetaSP is still firmly entrenched in many markets.

FWIW….The last time I tried something like this in Cinema Tools, it changed the sample rate of the audio to an unusual rate, presumably to keep the audio in sync. I had to render to use it in FCP. Using the Compressor method resulted in a file with a standard sample rate with perfect sync.

I just tried it. In the inspector (using the 8-bit Uncompressed Codec), I click Video Settings…in the resulting window, I go to the pulldown menu for frame rate and at the bottom I see “Custom”…you can set it whatever you like.

I’ll second that…its not free, but you will find that you will use Nattress film effects a lot. $100 well spent. I’ve tried all the film look plugins out there and I think its the best.
