Exporting subtitle with Alpha channel?

I tried that, but it still has black background to it.
Is there any way that I can just have the text exported so
that the background is transparent?

Did you import it to Avid yet? Or are you watching it in a Quicktime Player?

If you are watching it in QT you’ll see the black background… when you import it to Avid it will be transparent.

No, I actually imported in FCP again, and
had a movie below it. And it still had the back background…

Make sure you DO NOT render it.
Rendering makes a composite from the top layer down.
