    two video tracks – filters applied to both.

    under some circumstances razor-blading the lower clip will force the whole clip to re-render.

    Anyone know why this happens or how to avoid it?

    some types of filters effects are dependent on the length of the clip. if the clip gets shorter (by a cut) then the effect needs to be recalculated.

    when I encounter this I’ll just blade a small section that im working on so that’s all I render each time

    this is happening with color correction filters and the like which are not dependent on the clip length, or at least shouldn’t be…

    Try using the trim tools. Very rarely do you actually need to use the Blade Tool. A trim should not foil your renders.
