  • Softer dissolve / FADE?

FCP’s dissolve is not as smooth as other NLE’s. Is there a way to put bezier curves on a fade / dissolve? I just want he overall effect to have a smoother ramp in and out without having to make it so long.

    Thanks, Glenn

If you use 2 video tracks, you can use opacity keyframes (and bezier curves) instead of a dissolve.

You can also purchase plugins that have various types of dissolves. Graeme Nattress has some good plugins…his set 1 includes G Dissolve which has some film like dissolve options.

Graeme is great. Another good one is Dissolve Factory.

Thanks guys. I have forwarded your thoughts to my boss. Why couldn’t FCP just have a nice fade that is smooth on the sides? My L.E. at home lets me adjust the bezier curve to my liking and then save it as a transition to use whenever I like. Simple.

It probably does. Have you rendered your dissolves? Most of these type of “why does this look so crappy” type questions come down to something that’s not been rendered & is only being seen in preview quality.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it is rendered. We are watching on the NTSC monitor. I guess we are just being picky. Our old 4:2:2 system had a really nice dissolve. Many NLE’s don’t doit as well as others. The area of concern is the ramp in or out. right there when the first dissolve takes place it happens not as soft as it could. My home system allows me to adjust bezier handles and then save it as a transition. Whether it is a fast or slow fade… it is silky smooth like film. If my boss had not commented… then it could have just been me. But it is vissable.
