  • Skipping the 5.1 update

Posted by John Steventon on June 7, 2006 at 12:49 pm

    Hi,

Due to working on too may projects, I wasn’t able to download and install the 5.1 update for my FCP suite. Now that the smoke has cleared, I thought I’d try it, only to find we’re now on 5.1.1

Is it all right to update directly to 5.1.1, or do I need to get hold of 5.1 first?

I’ve got final producer review today, so can’t try it out till the morning, but if anyone can give me a heads up in the meantime (and guide me to where I can get 5.1 if I need it (the apple download pages only mention .1.1) I’ll be happier to install in the morning.

    Thanks in advance

    John

5.1 is only available through a crossgrade (see the Apple web site) or a direct purchase of a new copy. There is no downloadable version of 5.1 available to customers.

    All the best,

So does that mean I’m stuck with 5.04 (that I bought in August 05) unless I buy 5.1?

Hmmm, the similarity between Apple and Avid is beginning to get closer…

    Thanks for the advice though.

At a top price of $99 for the crossgrade I don’t think Apple are anywhere near Avid’s upgrade prices just yet.

While having to pay for a point upgrade of FCP might rub you the wrong way, $39 is significantly cheaper than most of the Avid upgrades.
In fact, for those who only owned FCP 5 standalone, you can now upgrade to the ENTIRE FCP STUDIO SUITE for just $99…which is pretty amazingly generous.

Fair point. And I guess the Apple advances in technology and software are really good, so it’s best to be complaining about something like this rather than whining about no updates for 2 years!!

Being an iPod owner, I should be well aware of how quickly Apple upgrades its stuff, and not be quite as knee jerky about it.

    Thanks.

I prefer knowing legit customers are getting the upgrades and NOT the people using it for free. If it means mailing in my discs, I’m happy with that.

Agreed. BUT my DVD was lost, either by apple or by the post. Who knows? I ordered the upgrade in march, have been a registered user and owner since 2003 and bought the 5 – studio upgrade only last autumn.

Still it has taken 2,5 months of screenshots and pictures from my studio to get the update.

Now the dvd’s are on their way, though.

Yikes! I paid extra to make them trackable and Apple had the new ones back to me in less than two weeks (from US to Canada). I was impressed at how fast the turnaround was. I made sure, though, I crossed every t, etc and everything was obsessively legible.

Glad you got that sorted out, though! That’s enough to make you sweat.
