Of course, you’re right for 4×3. I should have been more specific. I was thinking only of 16×9. BTW, I believe Andy’s Guides has a 14×9 guide. Also, some monitors have guides markers built in so you can check that way, too.

Why not just use the “Send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project” inside FCP to send your reels to ST Pro? You can easily round trip back to FCP. https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/soundtrackpro/flexible-workflows.html

I’d believe the guides in FCP or do what Walter suggested and make your own guides. BTW, Andy Mees has a free plugin (Andy’s Guides) that gives you the standard settings and one where you can input your own dimensions. Title and action safe are defined as a percentage of screen area. That’s true for SD & HD. All you’ll know from playing the program on your tv is it’s good or bad for that tv. In the “old days” when we were editing SD with tape machines, we had a couple of old Sony 8″ monitors that were very tight at the edges, and we’d use them as an informal check for title safe. It’d be interesting to know if anyone has had a program rejected when they used the FCP guides.

H.264 is not an edit codec. Here are my suggestions. Export from Steamclip to a high-quality codec like 8-bit Uncompressed or Pro Res (not HQ). That will preserve the quality from the DVD and allow you to add graphics without degradation (like you’d get using DV). After editing in FCP, export a QT (ref or self-contained). Use that in Compressor to make mv2 and ac3 files. Finally, bring the mv2 and ac3 files into DVD Studio Pro to make your dvd.

I’m not familiar with the internal workings of QT Pro (and not in front of my edit computer to check), but see if there’s an option button. If so, data rate is probably there. You can use Compressor to make your final file (probably an h.264 file) and have much more control. The Inspector Window allows you to change preset settings if you want (or need to). Just click through the various tabs, although, most of what you want to do is in the Encoder tab.

She should make the DVD from whatever format she’s edited with. From her timeline she’d export either a ref or self-contained QT movie using Current Settings. Then in Compressor, using that QT, she encodes an mv2 and ac3 file to make the DVD. DVDs aren’t DV or any edit codec, they’re made with mv2 & ac3 (or aiff) files, which are made from whatever edit codec is used. The final step is using the mv2 and ac3 files in DVD Studio Pro to make the DVD.

If your drive is misbehaving, that’s probably your problem. Fcp is trying to find data and can’t. Try capturing with a plain old FW drive and see what happens. If the crashes stop, it’s your e-Sata drive.

The parameter that affects load time is data rate. High data rate = long load time. Using the same data rate with a smaller frame size won’t change load time a bit. But, as you lower the data rate, the visual quality will be lowered. So, you need to find a balance between frame size and quality for a given data rate.
