I should also have mentioned you can use an I/O device like the Kona 3 to do this in realtime.

Compressor should be able to do this. Just make sure to turn on Frame Controls and set the quality settings (particularly in the Resizing section) to best.

48kHz has always been considered the professional sample rate. However, FCP can be set to different sample rates in the audio settings section of the sequence settings. If you import a file with a different sample rate from FCP’s setting, you’ll have to render.

Do NOT use H.264 as an edit codec. It’s a delivery codec. You’ll have all sorts of sync and render issues. DVCPro 50 would be fine for files coming from a DVD. You should have no loss of quality. With DVCPro 50 you’ll get around 2 1/2 minutes per GB which would translate to around 18GB per 45 min program.

You need an input/output device. It connects to your MacPro with a PCI card or Firewire cable. Your monitor connects to that box to view the output. Likewise you feed video into the box for capture. You’ll have to decide how much you want to spend and how capable the box must be in terms of SD and/or HD. There are many choices.

And, if you have a multicore machine, Compressor will use them all of them if set up properly.

Nest them and move the nest? AFAIK you can’t group in FCP like you can in some other programs (like Pro Tools).
